I'd never even heard of pianist Freddie Redd before randomly coming across this Bluenote Connoisseur Series release and buying it like the jazz obsessed freak I am. There's a few things that make this an interesting listen. Firstly, the presence of a Jamaican drummer with a strange style, Sir John Godfrey, who just happened to be around and take part in the making of _Redd's Blues_. Secondly, alto saxophonist Jackie McLean is his usual wicked self. He has one the truly instantly recognizable alto styles. Thirdly, this is my first exposure to tenor saxophonist Tina Brooks(a man), who I've heard very good things about. Redd is a solid pianist. I'm not completely blown away by him, but he's good. The center of my attention is Tina Brooks. Here we have yet another musician that died prematurely, perhaps on his way to huge things like trumpet player Clifford Brown, who perished in a car accident. His style feels, how should I say...natural. There's nothing forced. The notes just flow like a stream with no concern of being ground-breaking.
