First Mothers
I purchased First Mothers by 30-year Time magazine reporter Bonnie Angelo for a thesis project on Lyndon B. Johnson and public education. Her chapter on LBJ's youth and adulthood relationship with his mother, Rebekah, was quite interesting for my project, which pulled me into the rest of the insightful book on the relationship between presidential mothers and sons. Angelo, with a reporter's skillful writing, transports her reader deeper into the background of the modern presidents from Franklin D. Roosevelt to George W. Bush, exposing how each president interacted with his respective mother, his other relationships (particularly with their respective wives), and his local environment at that period in his life (e.g. college). In essence, First Mothers shows both the darker and lighter ... I purchased First Mothers by 30-year Time magazine reporter Bonnie Angelo for a thesis project on Lyndon B. Johnson and public education. Her chapter on LBJ's youth and adulthood relationship with his mother, Rebekah, was quite interesting for my project, which pulled me into the rest of the insightful book on the relationship between presidential mothers and sons. Angelo, with a reporter's skillful writing, transports her reader deeper into the background of the modern presidents from Franklin D. Roosevelt to George W. Bush, exposing how each president interacted with his respective mother, his other relationships (particularly with their respective wives), and his local environment at that period in his life (e.g. college). In essence, First Mothers shows both the darker and lighter sides of each mother-son relationship and its impact on the son's journey to the presidency. Her thesis is that these strong women shaped the lives of their sons, leaving an incredible imprint on each of the twelve presidents and she uses Freud's Opedius Complex as a framework. The best of the book reflects Winston Churchill's sentiment: "Great man have tough beginnings." Angelo illustrates that notion throughout her text, giving examples on how each president overcame a tragic moment in their lives. The worst of the book is it lacks an academic framework (e.g., MLA-, Chicago-, or APA 5th format); there's no footnotes or endnotes and a bibliography. This means the book is for the general reader by its journalistic writing style. Despite the lack of an academic framework, I recommend this text for your mother, as a Mother's Day or Christmas gift.
