Out of Sync Paperback – June 3, 2008

At sixteen, Lance Bass received a phone call from Justin Timberlake that would change his life forever. Soon after, he left his small-town home in Clinton, Mississippi, to join an emerging musical group called *NSYNC. Two years later *NSYNC was inspiring Beatles-esque mania around the world, becoming the face of the new MTV generation, and earning the all-time record for most album sales in a single day (more than one million) and in a single week for No Strings Attached.
He's remained in the spotlight ever since, and here he talks in depth for the first time about his childhood, his astonishing experiences as a young man and Christian growing up in one of the biggest bands in the world, his shock and frustration at the band's eventual dissolution, and his subsequent career, including his four months in Russia, training to become a cosmonaut.
He also frankly discusses life as a gay man—his first same-sex relationship at twenty-one, his struggle to keep his sexuality hidden from *NSYNC's fans in case it jeopardized the band's success, and the true circumstances that led to his decision to publicly come out at the age of twenty-seven.
Full of fascinating behind-the-scenes lore and revealing insights from a pop star who, until now, has been notoriously private, Out of Sync is the book that millions of fans have been waiting for.

back to the book: lance talks about his previous singing projects before nsync (he was in a few other groups) when out of the blue, a young justin timberlake called and asked if he wanted to join a new group in florida? and with that...changed music history!!
so, to all the nsync fans or anyone who loves reading real-life rock n roll biographies (i always think the artist themselves writing the book is almost always better than an anonymous writer writing it!) this book is a very interesting read. and to lance: best of luck with your own group!! and yes, i would also love to see nsync get back together...for old time's sake LOL! thanks again for all the great nsync memories :)
If you are looking for gossip about other band members, pithy comments about his "exes" (including Reichen Lehmkuhl, who has also dated several other gay semi-celebrities), details about the alleged pedophile leanings of *NSYNC's mentor/manager Lou Pearlman, or "Running With Scissor"-like rants about being tormented by a dysfunctional childhood, you'd be very disappointed by this book. Lance plays it as bland as his public persona, talks about his supportive family and childhood in small town Mississippi, his early touring in amateur musical showcases, the lucky call that resulted in his being offered to join *NSYNC, the band's initial exposure and success in Europe, subsequent orchestrated debut in the US, his relationships with his four bandmates, later arguments over financial arrangements, and the itch to pursue solo careers that eventually led to the end of the band. He talks about the fact that, although he knew he was gay at an early age, he never acted on his feelings until in his early 20's, and how this led to a gradual coming out starting at that point. You can feel his enthusiasm in his difficult training to achieve a lifelong dream, going into space, and his frustration when the efforts fall short of an actual flight. Although essentially a chronological report of his teen and early adult years, the writing style seems to ramble a bit from topic to topic, and often veers off on tangents, perhaps mimicing Bass' style in real life. The advertised (apx.) 200 pages are a bit generous, as the print is large (with wide margins) on smaller than usual pages, which would come out to maybe 150 pages in a more standard format. But it is a reasonably entertaining, light bit of fluff with I did enjoy, and recommend as such. Four stars out of five.
With that said it's great he did it. That he came out and wrote about his life an experiences. Every gay person alive should buy this book for that reason alone. Five stars for that reason also.
If you like him, the band, or pop stardom you'll probably like it.
Seems Justin Timberlake saw the spotlight and realized that it was time for him to leave. Such a shame though, Nsync was a great group.
