After touring we enjoyed a chance to sit down, have "high tea". The tea and food were good but not a very high tea" environment.
It is definitely a hidden treasure of the Nation's Capital. As you walk around, you do not realize that you are in the middle of a major city. The gardens are beautiful and the staff is very nice.
The food here was surprisingly good, and we really enjoyed the lovely location, I highly recommend scheduling a stop for lunch if you plan a trip to Hillwood!
Some of the rich have good taste and others do not. Marjorie Merriweather Post had loads of money and good taste, as well as several spouses who provided her with other opportunities. Fortunately, she was in the right place at the right time to save hundreds of priceless Russian art objects when the Soviets needed money (by the way, you will find many Russians visiting this place because they know what is here). Yes, there are glimpses of excess, such as the photo of Marjorie as Marie Antoinette, but overall the mansion is understated and tasteful compared to others opened to the public of this genre in the US.
Make sure you visit the south lawn and see the glimpse of the Washington Monument, a great spot for resting your feet or a picnic. The cafe also is a great destination for lunch. The gardens and the house have been magnificently maintained to a standard not often found. The foundation has done an excellent job maintaining and expanding within it's original context, and the volunteers and employees were some of the most hospitable and helpful around.
This is one of those hidden gems in DC that you should put on your bucket list.
Museum of great importance for the world community, especially good for local communities as well as for the study, this is very helpful for generations. It is necessary for good management and exciting, completeness such as dining / restaurant, the park around the museum embellished, making visitors feel at home. Thus it can improve the exchange and the public can enjoy it and learn that it takes. I hope this review is useful for many people and hope to continue to grow for the benefit of society. Thank you.
My dear husband picked this place as he knows my love of flowers and beautiful collections of decorative objects. This place was absolutely beautiful and the collections of Ms. Post amazing. Many of her Cartier objects were on display when we visited and they were absolutely breathtaking. The precision in craftsmanship is admirable.
The gardens were lovely and the audio tour helpful. The only disappointment was that the Japanese style garden didn't have the water features in order as they were in the process of updating the water pump and filtration systems. I bet it's absolutely beautiful when they're in working order.
We had lunch at the cafe there. We both had salads and they were fresh and flavorful. Nothing to ooh and ah about, but they were good. The cutting garden is a must see as is of course, all the objects d'art about the house, which Ms. Post built as a museum and left as her legacy.
