London 1865
In an effort to rebel against a society where women are expected to conform, free-spirited Lady Margaret Montagu Douglas Scott flees her confines, and an arranged marriage. But Lady Margaret’s parents, the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch, as close friends with Queen Victoria, must face the public scrutiny of their daughter’s impulsive nature, and Margaret is banished from polite society.
Finding strength amongst equally free-spirited companions, including Queen Victoria’s daughter Princess Louise, Margaret embarks on a journey of self-discovery that will take her to Ireland, America, and then back to Britain, in search of the life she was always meant to lead and the love she meant to find.
Incorporating research into her heritage and drawing upon her own unique life journey, the Duchess, with co-writer Marguerite Kaye, pens a fictional account of the life of her great-great-aunt, Lady Margaret Montagu Douglas Scott. Rich in historical detail, and set amongst the drawing rooms of Victoria’s court, and the grand country houses of Scotland and Ireland, Her Heart for a Compass is a breathtaking romantic novel of daring to follow your heart against all odds.

Writing historical fiction is clearly Sarah’s calling. For a debut novel, this was excellent, and she can only get better from here. It’s a shame she didn’t start writing decades ago because she could easily outpace the top writers of this genre. I am off to read her second novel, and hope there’s a 3rd coming soon!
The story takes place over many years and follows the life of Lady Margaret Montagu Scott. Not ready for marriage, especially to the man her father has picked for her, Margaret acts rashly on the night that their betrothal was to be announced. From that moment life for her really begins. It certainly isn't all sunshine and roses, equally, it isn't all doom and gloom for her. What she does, who she meets, her friendships, and loves, and where she goes all make fascinating, exciting reading. Although a work of fiction, knowing it is based on some real-life people and places made it all the more intriguing for me. The amount of research that went into the book shows and is very much appreciated. It really helps to set the scene when you can read all about what people are wearing and/or the places they are visiting etc.
I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of this story and definitely recommend it.
