‘Have you ever had a secret that you couldn’t tell a soul, even the people you love? I have.’

Lucy has a kind and adoring husband, a job she loves as a teacher, and a house on Mulberry Avenue with floaty curtains and the softest bed linen. After her troubled childhood, she knows life will never be perfect, but it’s pretty close.

She’s also got Amber, right next door. They never run out of things to talk about. Even if Amber’s life – with her high-profile job and handsome, wealthy boyfriend – is more glamorous than Lucy’s.

But then Amber starts to hint that her life isn’t all it seems, and when she comes to Lucy, terrified, saying that she’s getting threatening messages, Lucy promises to protect her.

The closer Lucy gets to anyone, the harder it is to keep her past to herself. But Amber’s boyfriend has left her just when she needs him most, and she doesn’t have anyone else.

Lucy knows all too well that people aren’t always what they seem. Sometimes they have secrets. And they’d do anything to keep them. Lucy’s still sure: she can trust her friend... can’t she?

Gripping and unputdownable, The Woman Next Door tells a story about the dark side of friendship, and has a final twist that will shock every reader. Perfect for fans of The Girl on the Train, Friend Request, and Clare Mackintosh.

This book was unputdownable. Misery meets Single White Female with a twist.

I have read books by Sue Watson before and among the many volumes I have read over the years, her stories still stick in my mind. The previous books were unlike this one. They were chick lit. Soft and airy. Fun. Nothing like this book. This is hard core psychological stuff. Top rate.

Halfway through there was a question if there really was a stalker or Amber had been making it all up. I was rooting for a stalker because Amber was such a nasty woman. I wonder how such people get away with stuff like she did. I was rooting for the bad guy. Not her but the one after her.

When the tables turned and the surprise happened, I was like “what the?” “OMG! What a jerk.” I don’t want to give too much away because the unfolding of the story is where the fun of the story lies.

About three-fourths through the chapters changed from a mostly Lucy POV to an Amber POV. There was also what I assumed was the stalker POV thrown in here and there just to mix it up a bit.

I felt vindicated at the end but I wish Lucy would have done a bit more to make everyone know she wasn’t at fault. You know she isn’t the stalker going in so I am not spoiling anything. We see most of the story through her eyes. She had a somewhat obsession with Amber because she was there for her on the tv screen when she was a kid growing up and offering kind tidbits on the evening news. It’s too bad Amber turned out to be not what Lucy suspected she was.

You need to read this book if you like thrillers. I have already picked up the other thriller Watson has written since I liked this one so much. Wonderful stuff. My highest rating.

I reviewed this book under the ARC title: All Her Secrets

I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.

I gave this four stars because I admire any author who can tell a story from start to finish. As an aspiring author myself, I always get stuck at a certain point of writing a story and end up abandoning it altogether. I think Sue has a decent ability to craft a solid story and make it compelling enough to where the reader is anxious to get to the conclusion. I managed to read this in, give or take, 4 hours.

That being said, I found the story started becoming extremely predictable at some point, even with the so-called “twists.” I won’t give anything away, but I knew almost instantly which character was writing the diary-like excerpts in between chapters. Perhaps a more casual reader might not be as anal-retentive as I am about jumping ahead of the storytelling and forming my own endings to see how they compare with the author’s.

It annoyed me how much each character seemed to lose their individuality and become more and more cliche as the story alternately got more and more complex. Matt went from endearing, chummy and supportive to a total locker-room d-bag. Lucy became insufferably more naive as the story wore on, then at the end she finally appeared to “grow a pair,” I guess after hitting her proverbial rock bottom? The only traits that persevered were Amber’s skankiness, selfishness, and indifference to everyone’s feelings. But, even SHE began to soften and crack a bit toward the end. Still, not once did she convey any human traits. She had a robotic, hypersexual demeanor that doesn’t exist in reality. Even the most evil sociopaths (real and fiction) usually possess a “human” trait resembling empathy, softness, or sensitivity. For me as a reader, it made the main characters highly unlikeable.

However, I’d recommend this to all readers. I have to point out how much I enjoyed the British slang, and learning how it differs from the way Americans speak and what we call things. The story is like a patchwork quilt of different movies and books pieced together but it’s still worth a quick read in my opinion.

So many dark family secrets brought to life that changed so many lives. Deep friendships broken because of deceit and fear. So many twists and turns and just when you think you have them figured out then Bam it would go in another direction. The ending was explosive and unpredictable. Lives were turned upside down but for some dreams do come true.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great edition to her library of twisty stories.

Such an obvious story except from past experience of reading her books, it is not obvious at all. At first you want to slap some sense into her, then you want to scream but don't. So not what I thought would happen, not at all. A great read, I couldn't put it down. I hate when reviewers just ruin the read by detailing the plots so I don't.

It is well written, story of someone a there relationship with a friend being stalked.
The description of elements as story is going is done well.
Definitely not fast paced, also if you skip small sections you really don't miss much.

First of all, I thought the story was good. Yes, it lagged a bit in places but mostly, I felt it moved along fine. But I agree with other reviewers who have noted the errors that I found really distracting! At one point, in discussing who could have left the booties, it was stated that no one except Lucy even knew that Amber had had a girl. Except… umm… Lucy had hosted a “pink baby shower” with pink balloons and pink cupcakes the month before and all the women from the book club were there! At another point, Lucy is telling a story about Matt and her having a conversation after the baby is tucked in upstairs. And somewhere in the conversation, they look down to gaze on the beautiful bundle sleeping in Lucy’s arms…. Timelines shift around so that they prove inconsistent. And also, you give something a “wide berth”, not a “wide birth”!? Good grief!! This editor was asleep at the switch!!
Having said that, I did find this a good read even if the errors were annoying and distracting.
