I guess it's impossible to review this album without bringing up Margaret's "horrible past" as an Idol contestant, but in this case there's a happy twist to the story because Margaret was smart enough to not rely entirely on her voice talents. Compared to the rest of the faceless Idol circus and the tenfolds of worthless albums it spawned (not to mention the immeasurable suffering it caused) this is Abbey Road, Blood on the Tracks and Hunky Dory rolled into one. Pretty Scary Silver Fairy is no masterpiece, but her electronic pop music ain't much worse than the material you can expect from whatever artists who rule the contemporary electro-scene. The single "Samantha" is the track that stands out the most and is the song she will always be associated with, but my favorite is the charming "Robot Song" with male vocoder vocals. I can only assume Margaret used it as a creative outlet for her robot fetish.

Margaret Berger - Pretty Scary Silver Fairy

Released: 2006
Purchased: 2008
Reason for purchase: I'm not entirely sure how I ever discovered Margaret, but this really is a very good pop album. In 2008 I decided it was time to order some of the Scandinavian albums I loved but would never find in stores over here.

Was it worth getting?
Yes yes yes. I'd been naughty and listened to it for years before getting it, so I knew what I was getting, but it was definitely an album worth owning.

What does it sound like?
Lovely catchy pop with some electronic production.
Some bits sound a bit '80s, some sound dreamy, atmospheric, melancholic.. Not too different from Bertine Zetlitz in places, while a song like Naive sounds more like Lily Allen. If you love pop there's sure something for you on here!

How has it aged?
Very well.

Memories: Just playing Robot Song and Pretty Things In Life an awful lot in late 2006/early 2007.

Best song(s): Robot Song

Worst song(s): Silver Fairy. Still good though.

Glorious electronic pop from Norway.
The last thing you'd expect from a former idol contestant, Margaret's sophomore effort eclipses any effort by any former idol contestant. In the vein of fellow countrywoman Bertine Zetlitz Margaret Berger has concocted a sweet but slick, glistening pop perfection. Each slice just as delectable as the other, she puts her contemporaries to shame ie, Kylie Minogue, Rachel Stevens, etc. "Samantha" and "Will You Remember Me Tomorrow" are two of the best pop hits of 2006 but these are just the tip of the iceberg of this fantastic album. It's worth the lofty import price though a worldwide release would be great. She's young, at 21 and can possibly be a great star in the near future. Margaret, Annie and Bertine Zetlitz are the holy trinity of electronic Pop Goddesses all from Norway! There isn't one song here I can rate below average since they're all so great. Buy this and support a truly worthy artist.

On her second album, Margaret Berger becomes a fully fledged electro artist, very much like Bertine Zetlitz, but also sounding a bit like Ladytron or Saint Etienne (or recent Kylie Minogue or Madonna).

Berger started out participating in the Norwegian "Idol" in 2004, but unlike most other "Idol" participants, Berger has creative control and does her own thing, and she does it excellently. Add Bertine Zetlitz and Annie, and it seems Norwegian electro is currently world class.

Also, if you like Girls Aloud/Xenomania you may want to check out this as they are a very obvious influence here.

The album ever by someone who has participated in "Idol"!
