LSG vs PBKS HIGHLIGHTS, IPL 2024: Mayank Yadav sizzles on debut as Lucknow record first win by 21 runs

Mayank Yadav: I never thought it would be such a good debut. Was nervous before the match. Tried to stick to my pace and aim at the stumps. Was thinking about using slower ones initially, but stuck to the quick ones. The first wicket (Bairstow) was special. It's good to debut at such a young age. Had a few goals, but can't help if injuries come in the way.

Morne Morkel: Very happy with the win, first point on the board, it's a nice feeling. Bowlers took it on a good wicket. They had a good start but the bowlers were brilliant to stay in the game. Young Mayank Yadav bowled with serious heat and got wickets. Very happy for him. He got injured in the first warm up game last season and got ruled out so had to manage him better this time. He bowled 155 tonight and made life uncomfortable. He ran in and that was the pleasing thing for all of us. It was a good wicket and for him to stick to that hard length - that's his strength - in this humidity in your first game in front of a big crowd, credit to him. Happy with 2 points tonight.

Shikhar Dhawan: They played well, Livi got injured which impacted us. He'd have come in at 4. Mayank bowled really well. His pace outsmarted us. It was nice facing him, surprised me with that pace. As an experienced player, I'd use his pace. But he figured it out and bowled yorkers to keep me down to a dot and a single. I was mindful and told my partners to use the short side. He bowled at Prabh's body and got him out. Told Jitesh to leave Mayank and take on the other bowlers but they bowled well too and then used the pressure against us.

Short from Naveen and Livingstone hammers it across the line and the ball hits the spidercam, dead ball! Naveen follows up with a wide. Naveen slides one in and Livingstone swings it through the arc over mid-wicket for SIX and writhes in pain immediately after the hit. Overpitched delivery and Livinstone flays it through mid-off for FOUR. He can surely bring the deficit to a minimum. Length ball from Naveen and Livingstone whacks it down the ground for SIX. A dot, finally, as Naveen's slower ball beats the batter. Three clinical balls to finish and LSG register their first win by 21 runs over PBKS.

Krunal to bowl the penultimate over. He starts with a gentle wafter outside off. Livingstone parries it behind square for a single. Krunal darts one into the blockhole and Shashank digs it out towards deep point for a single. Wow, what's that? Krunal has managed to land a quick bouncer and Livingstone misses out on an uppercut. In the slot and Livingstone thumps the ball down the ground for FOUR. A single to finish. 41 needed to win in 6 balls.

Short from Naveen and Shashank beats the mid-wicket fielder with his pull. Another quick bouncer and Shashank swivels with a top-edge and gets away with a single. Meanwhile, Mohsin Khan is down in the deep behind the boundaries, clutching his hamstring. Naveen fiddles with his pae and lines, keeping it away from Livingstone's reach. The chase is slipping out of Punjab's hands now.

Short and wide, Livingstone flays Mohsin to the deep for a single. OUT! Dhawan perishes. Slower bouncer from Mohsin gets a feather from Dhawan as he attempts a hook and de Kock holds onto a tough catch diving forward. OUT! Sam Curran falls first ball. Another bouncer and Curran miscues the pull straight to Pooran at mid-on. Lucknow have managed a remarkable turnaround in the space of a couple of overs.Shashank Singh keeps out the hat-trick ball with a single.

Mohsin returns with an overpitched delivery and Jitesh drills it down the ground for FOUR. Mohsin follows up with a string of sharp deliveries. Dhawan attempts a shuffle across for a pull behind square but misses. Dhawan reviews the ball for a wide.

Fiery bumper from Mayank and Prabhsimran scythes it with some wood behind third. Mohsin runs in to pouch it but oversteps the fence for SIX. Another short ball and Prabhsimran's swipe goes straight to the mid-on fielder. Beaten by sheer pace! 

Jitesh Sharma is in at 4. Two bouncers welcome the batter to the crease.

Prabhsimran Singh c Naveen-ul-Haq b Yadav 19 (7b 1x4 2x6)

Bishnoi tosses one on fifth stump and Prabhsimran pumps it down the ground for FOUR. Googly on the full and Prabhsimran slog-sweeps it comfortably over long-on for SIX.

Mayank Yadav starts with a 155.8 kph delivery! OUT! Bairstow falls to the extra pace of the Delhi boy. Firm bumper and Bairstow miscues the pull. This guy has some serious wheels. Prabhsimran is in at 3 as IP. A single to start. Dhawan uses the pace from Mayank to guide another ball down to third for FOUR.

Jonny Bairstow c Stoinis b Yadav 42 (29b 3x4 3x6)

Bishnoi starts with a googly. Dhawan sits on one knee and attempts a cut but meets the point fielder. Dhawan flicks one across the line and reels in a quick two runs. 100-run stand up for Dhawan and Bairstow. Three sliders on the trot and Bairstow fails to clear the circle. Top over from Bishnoi with just three from it.

Mayank Yadav into the attack. He starts with a 147.1 kph delivery that rushes past Bairstow's blade. Short, wide and Bairstow's fierce cut races to the fence for FOUR this time. Mayank follows the batter this time and hits 150 kph with his third delivery in the IPL! Mayank rushes one to the pads and Dhawan nimbly flicks it down leg for FOUR.

Short from Krunal and Bairstow smokes the ball over mid-wicket for SIX. Tosses up into the slot and Bairstow unfurls another slog-sweep for SIX! Three singles to follow and the pressure sways right back to the LSG camp.

Ravi Bishnoi replaces Mohsin.

A couple of singles for Bairstow and Dhawan as the asking rate creeps up. Well Dhawan brings it down almost instantly with a cracking slog-sweep for SIX over long on. 50 off 30 balls for Dhawan. A quicker googly to follow and Dhawan misses out on the cut.

Krunal Pandya into the attack. He wafts one in and Bairstow gets an inside-edge that slides past the leg-stump for a single. He maintains a tight line of attack and the batters tread on singles. Four from the over.

Bumper from Mohsin and Dhawan has enough room to slash it over point for FOUR. FOUR more as Dhawan creams a fuller ball through point again. Half-tracker angling in and Dhawan pummels it over mid-wicket for SIX this time. Dhawan's on a rampage. He follows up with a single. A wicketless PowerPlay for Lucknow.

Naveen changes ends. Dhawan gives a charge but misses out as Naveen slides one across the line. He varies his lengths deftly and the batters tread one ones and twos.

Mohsin Khan into the attack

Short from Mohsin and Bairstow flat-bats it across the square for SIX. Mohsin moves another in and Bairstow attempts another heave but misses. Bairstow blocks out another delivery and attempts a quick single. Mohsin is quick to the ball and narrowly misses out on a run out chance as Dhawan storms across the turf.

Quicker delivery from Siddharth and Bairstow gets a thick inside-edge towards short fine-leg for a single. Short ball angling in and Dhawan adjusts well to parry it behind square for FOUR. Another quick delivery on the full and Dhawan reacts with a firm drive through cover for FOUR. A reverse from Dhawan! Siddharth wafts one in and Shikhar Dhawan pulls off a rare reverse-sweep for SIX over point!

Naveen-ul-Haq from the opposite end. He lines one in and Dhawan clips it to square-leg for a single. A couple of singles to follow. Naveen shapes one in and Bairstow creams the fuller delivery through cover for FOUR. Naveen overpitches and Bairstow drills it once again through cover for FOUR.

M Siddharth opens the attack on debut. Siddharth keep it fairly straightforward to cramp up Dhawan for four dots. Is he generating a bit out of swing here? Dhawan goes for an expansive drive outside off and the thick edge trickles down through third for FOUR.  A single to end the over.

The groundsmen are sopping some dew from the outfield. Huge task nevertheless for Punjab to chase this one down. Shikhar Dhawan and Jonny Bairstow walk out for the chase.

Low full toss from Harshal and Krunal turns down a single after driving it to long-on. Slower ball on length and Krunal lobs it down the ground for two runs. Another full-toss and Krunal slices it through cover for FOUR. OUT! Mohsin falls at the non-striker's as Krunal taps a fuller ball back to the bowler. Naveen-ul-Haq walks in as the Impact Player, replacing KL Rahul. Another full toss and Krunal pumps it towards long off and decides against a single again. Low full toss and Krunal slides it across for two runs as LSG finish on 199.

Mohsin Khan run out (Patel) 2 (1b)

Slower-bouncer from Curran and Krunal uppercuts it over the keeper for FOUR. Short from the bowler and Krunal heaves it to the deep for a single. OUT! Curran sends in the slower one and Badoni fails to clear the long-on fielder with a one-handed slog. Ravi Bishnoi is in at 8. OUT! A first-baller for Bishnoi. Short ball and Bishnoi pulls it straight to the fielder in the deep. Mohsin Khan is in next. Two runs off the hat-trick delivery as Mohsin guides Curran to the deep.

Harshal starts with a yorker and Krunal drives it to long-off for a single. Slower-ball outside off and Krunal gets an under-edge past the keeper for FOUR. Fuller ball and Krunal drills it to long-off for one run. Badoni finds another single. Krunal is working the spaces in the deep to good effect. Harshal offers him width and Krunal creams it through the off-side for FOUR. Harshal is wavering on length and has conceded three wides in the over. In the slot and Krunal lofts the ball nonchalantly down the ground for SIX! 20 from the over as Krunal retains strike with a single.

Curran returns. Slower-ball on leg-stump and Badoni flicks it to short fine-leg for a single. Short ball to follow and Krunal pulls it to the deep for another run. Curran varies his pace effectively through the over, conceding only five in his third over.

The 14th over bowled by Arshdeep Singh started well for Punjab. A slower short ball from the left-arm pacer, just outside the offstump, got a well-set Quinton de Kock to go for the pull but mistimed it. A top edge flew high and not far away from wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma who completed the catch. It brought out a leaping celebration from Arshdeep as de Kock was looking to go big after his half-century. 

A couple of deliveries later, there was another short ball around the same length, but quicker from Arshdeep. This time Nicholas Pooran went for almost the same shot that de Kock went for earlier. Once again, the ball caught the top edge, But the pace on it this time, took the ball over the wicketkeeper's head and to a four. Two nearly identical deliveries in terms of length, but very different outcomes as this time Arshdeep had hands on his head.

Rabada to Pooran, OUT! Dragged on. Massive wicket for Punjab in the situation as Rabada's slower ball, away from the off-stump induces a false stroke from the LSG skipper. Krunal Pandya is in at 7. He opens his account with two runs. Rabada tails one in and Krunal swivel-pulls it in over mid-wicket for SIX!

Nicholas Pooran b Rabada 42 (21b 3x4 3x6) 

Brar is back. Fraction short outside off and Badoni attempts a cut. Thick outside-edge and the ball zips into Jitesh's pad. Loud shout as Brar lines in and hits Pooran's pad but the ball is probably missing leg. PBKS decide against a review. Brar wafts one in and Pooran dances down and blasts the ball over wide long-on for SIX.

Arshdeep to de Kock, OUT! The timeout works in favour of Punjab. Slower bouncer and de Kock gets a top-edge and skies it straight to Jitesh. Ayush Badoni is in at 6. He finds a single first ball. Arshdeep pushes one outside off and Pooran swats it through cover for FOUR. Quick bumper and Pooran gets the top-edge this time over the keeper for FOUR. Arshdeep nails the yorker this time and Pooran digs it out to long-off for a single.

Quinton de Kock c Sharma b Arshdeep Singh 54 (38b 5x4 2x6)

Harshal lines one towards the pad and de Kock slides it cheekily down leg for FOUR and brings up his half-century! Fuller ball outside off and de Kock squeezes it to square-leg for a single. Slower-ball from Harshal and de Kock misses it altogether. Fumble from the keeper and the batters reel in a bye.

Short from Chahar and Pooran launches the ball high and over the long-on fence for SIX. Chahar drags it short once again and Pooran goes the other with a slap through mid-off for FOUR. In the slot and Pooran smokes it down the ground for another SIX! A slew of singles and LSG are back on track.

Rabada is back. Fuller ball outside off-stump and de Kock gets a thick outside-edge flying over the keeper for FOUR. Rabada offers some room and de Kock goes for a fiery cut but finds the point fielder.

Harshal lines one towards the pads and Pooran guides it down to the short fine-leg fielder. Change of pace from Harshal and the batters tread on singles. Slower-ball in the slot and de Kock waits on it before swatting it through mid-off for FOUR.

Chahar tosses one up and Stoinis clobbers it down the ground for SIX. A drag-down this time and Stoinis nimbly rocks back to wallop the ball over cow corner for another SIX. OUT! Chahar gets his man this time. A flatter delivery on length skidding on and Stoinis' rash heave is nowhere in line of the ball. Chahar is pumped as Punjab make further inroads. Nicholas Pooran is in at 5.

Marcus Stoinis b Chahar 19 (12b 2x6)

Harpreet Brar replaces Curran.

Two deliveries on length and Stoinis finds Dhawan twice at cover. Excellent fielding from the captain. Brar goes fuller and Stoinis taps it back to him. Width from the left-arm spinner and Stoinis drags the ball to sweeper cover for two runs. A single to follow. de Kock directs the last ball to deep cover for a run.

Rahul Chahar into the attack. de Kock and Stoinis are not entering a shell. They keep themselves and the scoreboard busy with a slew of ones and twos. Seven from the over.

Curran is back.

OUT! Flashy stroke and Padikkal finds the mid-off fielder. A needless charge from Padikkal against Curran and he ends up sending the length ball straight to Dhawan. Marcus Stoinis walks in at 4. He gets off the blocks with a single. Slower delivery on length from Curran and de Kock attempts to muscle it down the ground. He clears the mid-on fielder and fetches two runs. Curran hits length again and de Kock connects with a rash heave over mid-wicket for SIX!

Devdutt Padikkal c Dhawan b Curran 9 (6b 2x4)

KL Rahul didn't walk out for the toss, with Nicholas Pooran leading LSG against Punjab. In an apparent move to ease Rahul back into the scheme of things, he was to be utilised as an Impact Player. So his primary role was going to be just with the bat, and his brief stay in the middle turned out to be eventful. After a typically watchful start in the first couple of overs, Rahul went after Kagiso Rabada first ball. An early display of intent but he got a reprieve when Harshal Patel dropped the ball at deep square leg. 

Back on strike against Arshdeep Singh next over, Rahul smashed one down the ground for a six. Next ball, he again looked to go aerial but mishit it short of mid-on. The ball after, another lofted shot down the ground for four. Off the fourth ball, a wristy flick that plugged in the outfield for a couple. But his stay in the middle would soon end as he guided one to Jonny Bairstow at backward point. Not the greatest of impacts, but a better show of intent.

Rabada overpitches and Padikkal pumps the ball over mid-off for FOUR. A touch of width and Padikkal watchfully nudges it past first slip for another FOUR. Another delivery on the full and Padikkal lobs it to the deep, just short of the square-leg fielder. Rabada finishes well with a quicker delivery steaming past de Kock's blade.

Length from Arshdeep and Rahul hoists the ball comfortably over mid-off for a cracking SIX! Short from Arshdeep and Rahul mistimes the pull towards the mid-on fielder, the ball falling just short. Slower-ball in the slot and Rahul drills it down the ground for FOUR. Length again from Arshdeep and Rahul unleashes a nonchalant flick towards deep mid-wicket for two runs. Livingstone who attempts a run in the deep to make a save has seemingly hurt his leg. He is limping off the field. OUT! Rahul guides one straight to Bairstow. Arshdeep moves the ball across the turf and Rahul makes a gentle shift to guide the ball behind point. Bairstow is housed comfortably for the shot and he takes a massive catch.

Kagiso Rabada replaces Curran.

IN THE AIR and dropped! Quick bumper from Rabada first-up and Rahul hooks it to the deep. Harshal Patel makes a lot of ground running from square-leg but fails to latch onto the ball. Huge chance gone down there and Rabada's face says it all. Rabada comes around the stumps to de Kock. Width on offer and de Kock scythes the ball through point for FOUR. Classic de Kock! A touch shorter lining in and de Kock somehow slices the ball behind the backward square fielder for SIX!

Arshdeep Singh from the opposite end. 

In the air and de Kock finds a single with a streaky push past point as Arshdeep moves one away. Considerable movement for Arshdeep as he swings another one down leg to Rahul for a wide. Another inside-edge and Rahul gets off the mark with a single. Excellent lines from Arshdeep. de Kock is forced to make room by moving to the on-side and squeeze the ball towards deep backward point for one run. Rahul responds with a single down to fine leg. Thick edge as de Kock goes after an outswinger and the ball parries over the short third fielder for two runs.

Sam Curran takes the new ball. de Kock on strike with a slip in place. Curran rushes one towards the off-stump and de Kock gets a faint edge towards the on-side. Straighter line and Curran rushes the ball past de Kock's outside-edge to the keeper. Fuller delivery and de Kock taps it towards mid-on. Overpitched and de Kock leans into a superb straight drive, beating mid-off for FOUR. A single to follow. Curran shapes one in and Rahul taps the last ball to backward point.

Shikhar Dhawan - We would have bowled first, lots of dew when we came to the ground (last night). Our lines cane be tight, while batting, we can't afford to lose wickets in clusters. It's still early in the tournament and we've spoken about that in the dressing room. We'll have to make the most of the powerplay. No changes for us.

Nicholas Pooran - We'll bat first. Looks like a good track, runs on the board could be vital. KL is coming back from injury and we're looking to give him a break in such a long tournament, but he'll play as an impact player today. Everyone must take the opportunitiesand perform at their best.

Visuals suggest that Delhi quick Mayank Yadav is set to make his LSG debut. He's grabbed eyeballs after clocking 150kph during the last domestic season.

Brian Lara and Matthew Hayden size up the pitch: The square boundaries are at 61m and 68m respectively, the straight boundary is at 76m. There is a bit more grass on this wicket, it's a bit more thicker, so there might be something in it for the pacers and the spinners. But it does look good for batting with no cracks. Dew could be a factor though and the captain winning the toss could bowl first.

No batter has hit as many sixes as Nicholas Pooran in T20s since the start of 2023 - 122. Lucknow will hope that their star strike will come good to be the differentiator on slow pitches at home.

KL Rahul has no fifty in a match-winning chase for Lucknow. His only three fifties in chases as LSG opener have witnessed him cop the ire of experts and fans on social media, more recently with his knock against Rajasthan and more famously in the IPL 2022 Eliminator against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. This IPL season has seen the most venomous targeting of a player ever. And this time, it has gone way beyond the usual online trolling.

Hardik Pandya, following his switch from Gujarat Titans to Mumbai Indians, got hysterically booed all through his team’s first outing in Ahmedabad, his home venue for the previous two seasons. The anger was apparently because of Gujarat’s sense of betrayal. The accusation was mounted on weak legs. It fell flat pretty quickly.

In the very next game, in Hyderabad this time, the screeching jeers from the stands didn’t stop. Visuals also emerged of a shower of shoes hitting a giant screen on which a smiling Hardik spoke after MI’s second successive loss. This Monday, MI play their first home game of the season.
