I think that my experience in SMU's graduate Acting program has been great so far. It is a very challenging syllabus that has encouraged a lot of introspection on my part (both as a human, and as an actor.) Our professors are very technically proficient at what they do and as such, I feel that the our classes are very beneficial. On a practical level, we are able to implement what we learn in class in a more demanding setting (working either in on campus productions or professional ones.) There is also a full tuition scholarship for all (8) students accepted into the program, which is a huge help financially! I would say the next best thing would be to waive the SMU health insurance fee which is very expensive (and mandatory for all international students.) Where the department could improve would be to bridge the gap between the academic and professional more intentionally (as most -if not all - the networking I have done since being here has been through my own efforts.)
I would add that one thing I wish I had done better, and hope to do better as my final year approaches, is to have a better work/life balance. The schedule is intense (especially in second year, when we started teaching). So having things outside of school (that have nothing to do with actually participating in theatre projects) to do that bring you joy and are relaxing are things I would advice anyone attempting this path to keep in mind.
I am currently enrolled in the program. I love that the program provides evening/ weekend classes to accommodate full time working students, or other factors that prevent a student from attending day classes. I wish the program provided some virtual classes for their students but understand some benefit that is with in person learning.
