001. General Information
-----------------------------------------------------------

This is a walkthrough for the game called "Nancy Drew: Midnight in Salem". The
game was released in December of 2019, on Steam and Her Interactive's website.

002. Video Walkthrough
-----------------------------------------------------------

Do you want to see a video of how to beat the game, rather than read how to do
it? You're in luck! I made a video walkthrough for this game, which can be found
here:

The videos come complete with my live commentary.

003. Walkthrough
-----------------------------------------------------------

003a. Moosham Castle
-----------------------------------------------------------

Nancy starts the game in Moosham Castle, where players get a brief tutorial on
how to play.

You can open the window by clicking on it. You can move left and right by
clicking on the left and right sides of the screen. You can right-click to move
the camera in all directions.

On the desk is a piece of paper that Nancy and pick up. You left-click to read
it, and you right-click to rotate it. Click the X at the bottom of the screen,
in order to back away.

The upper/left corner of the screen is a menu, where you can save your game,
adjust the settings, or go back to the main menu.

Nancy has a cell phone, which is at the bottom of the screen, to the left of her
inventory. When you click on it, Nancy's tasklist automatically appears. The
buttons on the bottom of the phone, from right to left, are for calling people,
text messaging, looking at photos and taking photos.

Dr. Hirst is at the door, in the back of the room. You can talk to her, by
clicking on her. To choose a conversation topic, select it from the list at the
bottom of the screen.

Think you've got the controls figured out? Good! Then let's get back to the
mystery!

Nancy needs to find a hidden book. To the right of the window is a gray cloth.
Click on it, to find Judge Sewall's desk underneath. The letter on the desk
mentions LIGHT, in all capital letters. That is a clue to click on the lantern
that is carved into the desk. This reveals a keyhole.

As for the key, it's on the right edge of the desk, on the bottom of the curved
part. See how there is a square tile here, a different color than the rest of
the desk? Click on it, to get the key.

The key is added to your inventory. You have to rotate it, then click it, in
order to open it. That way, you can use the key on the desk.

This reveals a simple puzzle. You need to click and drag the box through the
maze. Lead it to the upper/left corner to reveal the Book of Apologies.

Dr. Elisabeth leaves. Go out through the door, and there is a brief scene, where
Deirdre Shannon calls and a hooded culprit steals the Book of Apologies. Again,
go out the door. Nancy chases the culprit into the woods.

Go forward down the pathway here. Nancy finds the culprit, but they manage to
escape. Look at the three items the culprit left behind: an AW key, a plane
ticket to Boston and a container which the culprit used to make a smoke bomb.

Once you look at all three items, back away. Deirdre Shannon calls, and she
officially asks Nancy to solve a mystery in Salem. Nancy agrees.

003b. Day One
-----------------------------------------------------------

Nancy arrives in Salem, where Deirdre explains the case. Her cousin Mei Parry
has been accused of burning doing the Hathorne House. The house is rumored to be
haunted, and several groups are vying to claim ownership of the house before the
90-day time limit expires this week.

Go through all the conversations, and Nancy arrives at the Parry house, where
she meets Teegan. Nancy can ask Teegan where the fire happened, or she can talk
about Mei. Teegan leaves for her job at the museum. Mei arrives, talks to
Deirdre for a bit, then goes itno the living room to play on her phone.

You can explore the Parry house at this point. Upstairs is the bedroom where
Nancy sleeps. On the dresser is an old photo of Teegan and her friends.

In the living room, you can talk to Mei, although she is not in a talkative
mood. On the bookshelf, left of the fireplace, you can find a can of
rust-be-gone. Take it for later!

In the wastebasket by the bookshelf, you can find scraps of paper. This is an
optional puzzle. Your goal is to put all the pieces together to spell out the
message "I know". You right-click to rotate a piece, and you left-click to move
a piece around. If two pieces go together, they connect when you put them
side-by-side. I find it's easiest if you start by forming the letters first,
then work on the floral design on the edge. The paper is rectangular.

Deirdre is in the kitchen. You have to talk to Deirdre, before you can leave the
house. Nancy and Deirde talk about Olivia's ghost tour and Judge Danforth. Those
are the two main things that you have to do on the first day, and you can do
them in either order.

Once you talk to Deirdre, you can leave the Parry house through the front door.
Deirdre's car is on the street, opposite of the house. Go to the car and click
on it to be taken to the Salem Town Square.

Ghost Tour
----------

When you first arrive in the town square, you see Olivia Ravencroft doing her
street performance. You can talk to her afterwards, and she mentions her tour
several times.

There are several places that are connected to the town square. Across the
street is the courthouse, surrounded by protestors. To the right of Olivia are
several shops, including Lauren's shop (which is currently closed). To the back,
on the left, is the cemetery. And on the far back is the Salem Museum of
History, which is connected to Olivia's gift shop.

You have to go into the museum and talk to Teegan. When you do this, Teegan
gives you a ticket for Olivia's tour. Talk to Teegan, if you want, then go back
to Olivia. Give her your ticket, and she gives you the tablet for the tour.

You can right-click the tablet to see a list of the seven spots on the tour. You
want to visit all seven spots. Each one has a little raven symbol on it. Use the
tablet on the raven symbol, by left-clicking the tablet, then clicking on the
symbol. Olivia will talk for a bit about the location, and the spot will by
crossed off the list on the tablet.

Here are the seven locations:

1. Salem sinkholes. They are in the corner of the town square, blocked off by
large "road closed" signs.
2. Accused witches memorial, in the museum. It's the large black plaque on the
wall.
3. Puritan Statue, also in the museum. It's standing in the middle of the room.
4. Little Liberty Statue. Enter the graveyard and go forward a few times. It's
the large statue, in the middle of the graveyard.
5. Hathorne House. Directly opposite of the graveyard entrance. Enter the
graveyard and go forward all the way, to reach it.
6. Unmarked graves. While looking at the Hathorne house, turn right. It's at the
statue of a person kneeling.
7. Judge Hathorne's grave. Go inside the graveyard, then go left. It's the first
grave you can look at.

Visit all seven locations, and the tablet will leave Nancy's inventory. You're
done with the tour!

Judge Danforth
--------------

There are protestors outside of the courthouse, but they don't stop you from
entering. Go inside the courthouse and turn right. The judge's door is in the
corner. Click on it to talk to him.

Judge Danforth has locked himself out of his office. Oops! He asks you to get
the backup key from Alicia Cole. Her office is directly opposite of his. Go
inside and ask her for a paperclip.

Use the paperclip on Judge Danforth's door, for a puzzle. You need to find which
of the five tumblers is the heavy one, the one that gives you the most
resistance when pushing it upwards. Once you find it, you want to move it up, so
it goes perfectly into the spot. There is a little bit of wiggle room, as to how
far up you have to push it, but if you push it up too far, or not far enough,
the game doesn't accept it.

The correct order to push the tumblers in is fourth, third, fifth, first and
second, if you consider the far-left tumbler to be first. This was the case for
me, when I played the game on both master and amateur sleuth modes.

Once you solve the puzzle, you can go inside and talk to the judge about the
Book of Apologies, the Hathorne House and Mei. Mei is being accused of arson,
because she's the only person in town with a history of arson.

A group called the Accused Witches (run by Teegan Parry) is hoping to get the
Hathorne property, but their evidence is incomplete. Lauren Holt, who lives in
the carriage house, also hopes to get the Hathorne property. Evidence related to
the case was stolen from the evidence room. The case will be decided in two
days.

After you talk to Judge Danforth, Deirdre is satisfied.

You have to talk to Judge Danforth in his office and finish the ghost tour, to
bring an end to the first day of the game. Deirdre will mention going home, when
this happens.

003c. Night One
-----------------------------------------------------------

Return to Deirdre's car, to see a scene of Deirdre and Nancy. They talk for a
bit, before returning to the Parry house.

Nancy wants to get Mei to open up, about the case. If you talk to Mei, she's
still angry and doesn't want to talk. She mentions that she lost her lighter.

Go outside. The lighter is by the front door. Pick it up. Now that you've done
Mei a favor, she is willing to talk to you about all the various things you've
seen so far.

Once you've talked to Mei, go to Deirdre. She's in the kitchen. Nancy tells
Deirdre that she wants to visit the Hathorne House tonight. Go to the car, to
drive to the town square, then go through the graveyard. Previously, Nancy
stopped at the Hathorne House sign. Now, you can go forward past the sign, to
the Hathorne House.

Nancy gets a phone call from the Hardy Boys, on the way. Hi, Frank and Joe!

Keep going forward to reach the Hathorne House. Nancy sees a light in the
upstairs area, as she approaches. She is caught snooping by Lauren Holt, who
lives in the carriage house. Nancy talks to Lauren for a while. Lauren believes
there is a will that shows SHE inherits the house, but no one has found it.

While leaving, Nancy sees a ghost that looks like the statue in the graveyard.
She is incredibly shaken by the experience, but she's determined to figure out
the truth behind it.

003d. Day Two
-----------------------------------------------------------

Deirdre wakes Nancy up. She says there's a surprise in the kitchen. It's the
Hardy Boys! Joe Hardy is terrible at cooking anything that isn't cheeseburgers,
so Nancy volunteers to help.

Click on the counter to begin. Joe didn't write the ingredients down correctly.
You can figure out the real ingredients, based on what your friends say when you
add something to the batter.

To add something, you click on a cup or a spoon, then the ingredient. Nancy
fills up the cup or spoon with that ingredient. Then, click on the bowl to add
it to the bowl. You can click on the sponge to restart. The correct ingredients
are...

1 cup of flour
1 cup of cornmeal
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon of salt

In step two, you have to add ingredients, to reach the correct weight. Add an
item by clicking on it, then the bowl. When you're done, click the whisk. The
correct ingredients are...

2 eggs
2 vanilla
1 milk
1 butter
1 nutmeg

The final part of making pancakes involves flipping them. Joe puts the batter in
the pan. When a pancake starts to steam, click on it to flip it. Steam appears
directly above a pancake. You have to flip each pancake twice, in order to cook
it. If you wait too long, the pancakes burn. Flip enough pancakes, and the
challenge is done.

You can make pancakes at any time you want, after this. You can make many
different types of pancakes and give them to the various characters. It's not
necessary to do this, but it can be a fun challenge.

Talk to your friends, who are sitting at the table. They discuss the case so far
and make plans for what to do next. Nancy's goals for this day are to examine
the Hathorne House, examine the break-in at the courthouse evidence room and
gather everyone's alibis. You have to do all three things to finish the
investigation for the day.

Optional Challenge: Making Truth Serum
--------------------------------------

In Lauren's shop, you can do a herb remedy minigame. It is completely optional.
Ask her what type of herbs she has, in order to get started.

Lauren's counter has many herbs, along with a list of ailments. You need to mix
three herbs together, to cure the ailments. Here's the key to the puzzle:

Slight = 1 serving
Moderate = 2 servings
Unbearable = 3 servings

Indigestion = cinnamon
Migraine = feverfew
Anxiety = chamomile
High blood pressure = garlic
Nausea = ginger
Liver condition = our lady's thistle
Memory problems = sage

For example, if the ailment is slight anxiety, that is 1 serving of chamomile (1
for slight, chamomile for anxiety). If it is unbearable nausea, that is 3
servings of ginger (3 for unbearable, ginger for nausea).

Lauren has a book of herbs. There's a page sticking out of it. Click on the
page, while the book is on the counter. Lauren will say it's private.

After you make three different remedies for Lauren, you can distract her. Talk
to her and say "I forgot to mention...". Nancy tells Lauren that Alicia is
looking for her, and Lauren leaves. While she's gone, Nancy can look at the
paper in the book of herbs. I should note that you can only do this on the
second day of the game. You cannot distract Lauren on a different day.

Once you read Lauren's paper, make three more remedies for Lauren. She will give
you a new herb. This is one of three ingredients for the truth serum.

Another ingredient is inside the locked box, on Lauren's counter. The key is
inside the store, behind some bottles on a desk by the window. Grab the key and
use it to unlock the box.

The third ingredient is in the forest, leading to the Hathorne House. Once you
move past the graveyard, and into the forest, you go two steps forward and one
step left. It's to the left, by a tree. It's a green plant called Rosemary.

Mix all three of the ingredients together to get truth serum. As I said, this is
completely optional. It's just a fun extra, as you can give the truth serum to
various characters and see how they react.

Hathorne House Examination
--------------------------

Lauren's shop is open now. Go inside and talk to her. Ask her about the Hathorne
House key, and she says Alicia has it. Go to the courthouse and ask Alicia for
the key. She has no problems handing it over to you.

Go to the Hathorne House. When you use the key on the door, it won't open
because it needs leverage. On the outside corner of the house is a red crowbar.
Pick it up, then use it on the door. Use the key on the door now, and it works.

Inside the house, to the right, is a small room. Look at the mirror and notice
it has a laurel in a specific spot. You want to click on the laurel, as Nancy
will say something about it.

Look at the cabinet that is reflected in the mirror. Click on the specific spot
where the laurel was, which is the right cabinet on the top. You can't do this,
unless you've examined the laurel in the mirror. Nancy will open this spot and
find a letter from Frances Tuttle. It says the will is in the house.

Also in the house is a jacket, by the base of the stairs. Take it, and open up
the inside pocket to find Olivia's card.

Once you get Frances' letter and Olivia's card, you are officially done with
examining the Hathorne House, and exploring it is removed from Nancy's task
list. Looking in Frances' room and upstairs is optional.

Another optional investigation is looking at the hand of the ghost scarecrow in
the woods. It has a piece of a flyer. Go to Teegan's museum and check the row of
fliers. They're on the desk that Teegan works at, in a plastic holder.

Use the flyer piece on the flyers. You want to match it to Olivia's flyer, which
is on the left side. You will have to rotate the flyer piece, to get it to match
perfectly.

Break-In at the Courthouse
--------------------------

As Nancy indicated in the conversation during breakfast, her dad can get her
permission to investigate the crime scene at the courthouse. Before that can
happen, you must go into the courthouse and click on the keypad, which is on the
evidence room door. If you don't do that, Mr. Drew won't answer his phone when
you call.

So, examine the keypad to the evidence room and call Nancy's dad. He calls Judge
Danforth for you. Talk to Judge Danforth, and he agrees to let you investigate.
He lost the post-it note which has the access code to the evidence room. It is
on the desk, on the side of the room that is opposite of the judge. It's behind
some books. This yellow post-it note says 0815.

You have to click on the post-it note, before you can get into the evidence
room.

In the evidence room, you can pick up a list of evidence, near the computer. You
want to compare it to the evidence drawers. That is, you want to find the three
empty drawers and use the evidence list on them. The three empty drawers are 6,
11 and 18. When you're done, Nancy notes that all three drawers contained
evidence for the Accused Witches group that Teegan runs.

In addition to examining the evidence, there are three things you must look at
in the evidence room. You must look at the broken window, the bars by the window
and the CCTV camera above the doorway. Then, you have to talk to Judge Danforth
about the CCTV camera.

You have to do all of these things, before the investigation into the evidence
room is complete. If you miss one or more of them, the investigation will remain
on the checklist on Nancy's phone.

To recap, you must examine the CCTV camera and ask Judge Danforth about it. You
must look at the window and the bars by the window. You must use the evidence
list on drawers 6, 11 and 18. That's how you finish the investigation into the
courtroom break-in.

Gathering Alibis
----------------

This is the simple part of the investigation! Talk to everyone about everything,
and you're done!

Judge Danforth is in his office, in the courthouse. Alicia Cole is in her
office, in the courthouse. Jason Danforth is by his car, outside the courthouse.

Teegan is in the museum, Olivia is in her store, next to the museum, Mei is in
the Parry House, and Lauren is in her store.

Some of the characters have alibis that match up. For example, Jason says he was
working at Alicia's when Nancy was robbed in Austria. Alicia says Jason was
working at her place, when Nancy was robbed in Austria. So they are each other's
alibi!

The only two alibis that are slightly tricky are Lauren's and Teegan's. With
Lauren, you have to ask about the one alibi, before you can ask her about the
second alibi. Don't accidentally think the conversation is over, just because
you talked about one alibi.

With Teegan, she gives you her boyfriend's phone number. Call him to confirm her
alibi.

Getting everyone's alibi is the easiest part of the second day of investigation.

Once you finish everything on Nancy's checklist, Teegan calls, bringing an end
to the second day of investigation.

003e. Night Two
-----------------------------------------------------------

Someone spray-painted the Parry House! It turns out that Parrys are related to
Samuel Parris, one of the villains behind the Salem Witch Trials in 1692.

Go into the living room and talk to Teegan. She explains about the family
connection to Samuel Parris, and how that inspires her to work on the Accused
Witches group. She's trying to right the wrongs committed by her foul ancestor.

Once you're done with Teegan, go to the kitchen, and the game switches to the
Hardy Boys. They're in the graveyard, looking for ghosts. You want to find all
three dead spots in the graveyard.

The first one is near the entrance. When you walk there, you get a puzzle. Your
goal is to make the two wavelengths line up perfectly, by turning the dials. The
left dial makes your wavelength wider or narrower. The right one makes it taller
or shorter.

If you're playing on Master Sleuth mode, you can flip the switch in the middle
from I to II. This lets you change the wavelengths some more, by affecting the
hills and valleys.

Master Sleuth mode is far more difficult, because you need to get the correct
wavelength on all four knobs, instead of just two. The difficulty is increased,
since you can only move two knobs at once.

If the challenge is too difficult for you, back away from the area and try
again. This gives you a different wavelength to match.

You have to do this challenge three times in a row, at all three dead spots in
the graveyard. The first one is at the entrance, the second is to the side of
the Hathorne House plaque, and the third is in the center of the graveyard, near
Joe.

After this, the Hardy Boys go into the woods to search. There are four things to
find in the woods, and where they are depends on which gameplay mode you're on.

On Amateur Sleuth mode, you can easily find the Jack-O-Lantern. To the right of
it is a plate with strange powder. In between the fog machine and
Jack-O-Lantern, and back a little bit, is a fog machine, on the ground. Go left
from the Jack-O-Lantern and forward a bit, to find a rope hanging from the
trees.

On Master Sleuth mode, the fog machine is to the left of the woods entrance. You
go straight forward to find the rope. From the Jack-O-Lantern, turn right, go
forward, and turn left to see the plate on the ground.

Once you find all four things, leave the woods and the graveyard. You go to
Olivia's store. On her desk is a strange note! Pick it up and look at the
backside. It indicates a specific grave.

Go back to the graveyard. Go forward twice, right, and forward. Look at the
grave to your right, which has a bush in front of it. The Hardys find a cypher
hidden here!

It shouldn't be a surprise that this is a deciphering puzzle. You want to spin
the inner ring, so the "o" and "h" are lined up. Then, spin the middle ring, so
the "h" and "o" are lined up with the rune that has three lines, which is in the
middle/left, in the upper half. Olivia's note on the left side of the screen
indicates these three symbols.

Once you have the cipher in place, click "select letters". You can click on
"rotate cipher" to go back to rotating the cipher, if you want.

Now, you want to click on the symbols that appear on Olivia's note. The first
line is "restock wands".

You need to reset the cipher after every line. Don't bother with the innermost
ring, as that is already in place. Move the outermost right counter-clockwise
six places, so it matches the second line of Olivia's note. The first rune is in
the middle/left. It spells out "grocery shopping".

To get the third line, you move the outer ring counter-clockwise six spots
again. You're matching the rune that's in the bottom/left, near the middle. It
spells out "inventory--just do it!"

To get the fourth line, you move the outer ring counter-clockwise four times.
You're matching the rune that is on the right, one below the middle. It spells
out "cat maintenance".

To get the final line, you move the outer ring counter-clockwise once, matching
the rune on the left with six lines. It spells out "get stock from L".

The Hardys confront Olivia over the fact that she fakes some special effects,
for her ghost tours. All three of them have tea, and they see the ghost. They
rush to the Parry House to tell Nancy, and surprisingly, all three of them saw a
completely different ghost. What's going on?

Nancy gets the option to choose what she thinks the evidence shows. It doesn't
matter which option you pick.

003f. Day Three
-----------------------------------------------------------

Talk to Nancy's friends, who are by the breakfast table again. Deirdre believes
the Hardys and Olivia were drugged with ergot, and Nancy wants to check the
access tapes. Those are the two main things you have to do today!

Check for Ergot Poisoning
-------------------------

You need to talk to the Hardys and Olivia. The Hardys are in the graveyard, and
Olivia is inside her store. The only thing they ate or drank in common was
Lauren's tea. When you ask Lauren, she says it was made with common tap water,
from her home.

The next step is not immediately obvious. You have to go into Alicia's office
and search. Inside a black box on her desk is a demolition request and a map. Go
to the evidence room, where there's a map of Salem near the computer. Use your
map on the big map. You'll have to rotate it, in order to get it to line up
perfectly.

The map lines up with the Hathorne House, on the upper/right side of the big
map.

Go to the Hathorne House. The marked part of the map is by the corner of the
carriage house, in the bushes. The grass looks slightly different here. Click on
it, and Nancy lifts it up. She sees a rusty pipe.

Use the Rust-Be-Gone on the pipe. If you don't already have it, the Rust-Be-Gone
is found inside the Parrys' living room. Once you use it on the pipe, Nancy
finds ergot spores. Someone deliberately put this in Lauren's water supply!

This explains why everyone had hallucinations of the ghost last night, and why
Nancy had hallucinations of the ghost two nights ago. But why would someone want
Lauren (and whoever drinks her water) to have hallucinations?

The CCTV Footage
----------------

Talk to Judge Danforth to get the USB stick for the computer in the evidence
room. Go to the evidence room and use the USB stick on it.

This starts a puzzle! You need to make a timeline of what the culprit did,
during the fifteen-minute time period when the evidence room was robbed. There
are multiple different cameras you can look at.
Talk to Judge in Judge's room. Alicia is there. You get the USB stick.

Here are the correct timeframes:

Entrance: 1, 11
Evidence Room: 8, 9
Outside: 00, 12, 13, 14, 15
Men's Room: 3, 4, 5, 6
Hallway: 2, 7, 10

The culprit appears to be Jason Danforth. He came in from outside and went
through the hallway to the men's room, where he changed clothes. He went through
the hallway to the evidence room, which he robbed. He left and spent some time
outside, making his getaway.

Once you finish the CCTV puzzle, find the spore, and ask the Hardys and Olivia
what they drank yesterday, the third day of investigation ends.

003g. Night Three
-----------------------------------------------------------

Go to the kitchen to talk to Nancy's friends. They discover who set the Hathorne
House fire, and Nancy resolves to find Mei. Deirdre Shannon goes away to
investigate something else.

Check the living room, where Mei usually hangs out. Move the pillows aside to
find her phone. Look at it, to see she's gotten messages from Jason Danforth.

As it happens, Jason's car is outside. Go out and talk to him. He drives Nancy
to the courthouse. Before exiting his car, click on his glove compartment. Nancy
finds a plane ticket, indicating Jason was the person who robbed her in Moosham
Castle, at the start of the game.

Talk to Jason about many things. He believes Mei is in a secret area, under the
graveyard. The tunnel is under the statue, in the center of the graveyard. Nancy
and the Hardys go there, and they realize they need a lantern. Go to Olivia's
and take the lantern from the desk. Put the lantern in the hand of the statue to
reveal a hidden passageway, next to the statue.

Go into the passageway. It's pretty dark. Turn around until you find the spot
where you can go forward. Nancy and the Hardys use their flashlights as phones,
and there's a maze puzzle. Nancy needs to follow the directions on her phone,
which are in north / south / east / west format. To make it trickier, Nancy is
not always facing north.

Here's the way to get through the maze:

Forward, left left right
Forward forward left right
Forward right left right
Forward

The game switches to the Hardy Boys, who are following the AW carvings, not the
directions Nancy got from Jason. Here's how to get through:

Left right forward
Forward forward right
Forward Forward (The Hardys will talk at this point.)
U-turn
Left and forward multiple times to the exit

The Hardys reach a door, which is locked with an icosahedron puzzle. There's a
paper on the table which explains the puzzle. It's a little hard to explain in a
text format like this, but I'll try! When you start the puzzle, the eight pieces
are like this:

       4
5 8
 1
       7
     6
2 3

Swap piece 1 with piece 2. Swap piece 2 with piece 3. Swap piece 3 with piece 4,
and so on, until you've swapped all eight pieces. Piece 1 is the only piece
which is shaped like a pyramid; you'll be swapping it with all the others.

Whenever you back away and restart the puzzle, they start in the same positions.
The middle piece of the icosahedron is already in place.

Once you're done with the puzzle, use the icosahedron on the door to unlock it.
The Hardys go inside and help Deirdre. They immediately solve another puzzle,
which is on the ground.

The book on the table is used to decipher this puzzle. Each paragraph of
Frances' letter refers to a different ring of the puzzle.

For example, she mentions midwinter and the brightest day, in the first
paragraph. That refers to "Yule" and "Litha". Press those plates, in that order.

The second ring is "Leo" and "Taurus". Third is "02-02" and "10-31". Last is
"Earth" and "air", which are both triangles with a horizontal line. In air, the
triangle faces upwards. In Earth, the triangle faces downwards.

Solving the puzzle makes a model house appear. Examine it. Push in the front
door, then the chimney, to open an attic room. There is a button under the table
in the attic. Press the button to make Frances' will appear, on the other side
of the room.

The game returns to Nancy, who found Mei. Mei has a concussion and cannot help
find the Book of Apologies.

Look around. On the wall is a large white poster with "premonitions" written on
it. Click on the poster to find a hidden alcove. It has a puzzle box! Put all 16
drawers into place to get the book.

Here's my attempt at making a picture for this puzzle.

R = rectangle piece sticking out
H = rectangular hole that should be filled
C = circle piece sticking out
D = circle piece that should be filled
T = triangle piece sticking out
U = triangle piece that should be filled

 R H R H
D R H R H H R C
 H R R R

 R H H H
T R H H R R H T
 R H H H

 H R R R
U R H H R R H T
 R R H H

 H H R R
C H R R H H R C
 H H H R

As you can hopefully see, the pieces with triangle or circle edges go on the far
left and right. The eight inner pieces only have rectangles and holes. Only two
of the eight inner pieces are identical.

In master sleuth mode, the drawers are like this:

 C D R U
H D C D C C D H
 T H H C

 U R R D
T T U D C T U R
 H D C H

 R C D R
R R H U T H R D
 H T D U

 R U C T
H C D H R U T H
 C H T H

As you can hopefully see, the top row has circles from let to right. The
lower-right piece with two triangles and two holes is easy to spot, as is the
piece with two triangles on the left and right.

Once you solve the puzzles, you get the Book of Apologies. Hooray! The culprit
starts to fill the passageway with the ergot-tainted water, in an attempt to
drown Nancy and Mei. Quickly, go through the maze to safety! Here are the
directions:

Forward five times
Left right left
Right right
Left forward forward

You end up in a small room. Talk to Mei, and click on the candles to see that
they are unlit. Ask Mei for the lighter, and she gives it to you. Use it on the
candles on the wall, as well as the lantern on the barrel. Now you can look
around.

To the left of the lantern is a paper about shadows, and right of it is a wooden
feather. Use the note on the candles to see that one of the bricks is labelled.

The barrel on the right has an AW sign on it. Click on the board that is two
above the AW. This gives you a metal object. Use it on the correct brick on the
wall for a second wooden feather.

Use both wooden feathers on the angel statue, between the candles. You have to
click and move your mouse around to dust off this dusty puzzle, before you can
begin to solve it.

To solve the puzzle, move the rightmost feather up twice. Move the
second-from-right feather up twice. Move in the innermost feather up three
times. You can only move the feathers on the right.

Solving the puzzle reveals a keyhole. Use the AW key to escape. Nancy and many
character arrive in Judge Danforth's office, where they confront the culprit.
Select the conversation options to accuse the culprit.

After this, Judge Danforth questions what to do about the Hathorne House. You
have three options, each of which leads to a different ending.

First, you mention the will and the Book of Apologies, allowing Lauren and
Teegan to share the estate.

Second, you mention the Book of Apologies only, allowing Teegan to have the
estate.

Third, you mention Frances Tuttle's will only, allowing Lauren to have the
estate.

After this, you have the option to accuse Teegan of setting the fire on purpose,
or setting the fire on accident. These also lead to different endings, where
Teegan is arrested or Teegan is sentenced to community service.

Once that's over, Nancy returns to the Hathorne House. Talk to everyone there,
and leave through the front door to end the game.
