(Nathaniel Mayer) Victor Rothschild, 3rd Baron Rothschild

(1910-1990), Zoologist and public servant

Victor Rothschild studied at Cambridge University, where he was a member of the Apostles society and was friends with Guy Burges and Anthony Blunt. He inherited his title in 1937 on the death of his uncle, Walter Rothschild. During World War II Rothschild worked for MI5, in charge of its counter-sabotage section. After the war he joined the zoology department at Cambridge, where he remained for twenty years. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1953. Rothschild served as chairman of the Agricultural Research Council from 1948 to 1958 and as head of research at Royal Dutch-Shell from 1961 to 1970. He sat as a Labour peer in the House of Lords.
