Lesson Plan: The Big Bang Science • Third Year of Preparatory School
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe how the universe began and how it has changed over the course of billions of years.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- know what the universe is,
- know that the universe began with the Big Bang,
- know that the Big Bang occurred approximately 14 billion years ago,
- know that the initial state of the universe had a very high pressure, temperature, and density,
- know that the universe is constantly expanding,
- know that in the early universe, only light elements such as hydrogen and helium formed,
- know that over time, gravity began to form galaxies,
- know that galaxies appear to be moving apart with the expansion of space.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the names of some common elements.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- inflation,
- subatomic particles,
- the fate of the universe,
- dark matter or energy,
- the cause of universal expansion or the changing rate of expansion,
- galaxy morphology and classification,
- Hubble’s law and -factor,
- any models of gravity,
- black holes.
