FIFA World Cup 2022: Morocco results, scores and standings

Morocco's Cinderella run at the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar came to an end finishing the tournament in fourth place following a 2-1 defeat to Croatia in their bronze-medal match on Saturday (17 December).

The match opened with a bang with Croatia landing the first blow seven minutes into the contest courtesy of a Josko Gvardiol goal. Morocco equalised two minutes later when Achraf Dari found the back of the net. Croatia found the breakthough shortly before the half-time break when Mislav Orsic gave his side the advantage.

The Atlas Lions, the first African team to reach the last four, fell 2-0 to reigning 2018 champions France in their semi-final clash. 

After Theo Hernandez had given the French an early lead, the underdogs enjoyed possession and chances with an acrobatic overhead kick from Jawad El Yamiq hitting the post just before half time.

And France seal victory with just over 10 minutes to go when Randal Kolo Muani tapped in from close range after good work from Kylian Mbappe.

Morocco's historic run to the semi-finals

Earlier in the tournament, Morocco made history following their shock 1-0 defeat of European giants Portugal to become the first African nation to reach the semi-final of the World Cup.

The Atlas Lions reached the quarter-finals after claiming the scalp of Spain on Tuesday (6 December) in a dramatic penalty shootout during the round of 16.

Spanish-born Achraf Hakimi sealed the historic 3-0 win on penalties, after Spain missed all three of its penalties, following a 0-0 tie over 120 intense minutes.

Their road to a surprising, first-ever World Cup semi-final appearance started on 23 November with a 0-0 draw against Croatia in Group F. They followed it up with two-straight wins to advance as the group winner.

Against Belgium on 27 November, Romain Saïss and Zakaria Aboukhlal gave the Atlas Lions a convincing 2-0 wins. Four days later, they bested Canada 2-1.
