Editorial Reviews
Limited four vinyl LP set. Live At Pompeii is the project from David Gilmour, and follows his critically acclaimed studio album Rattle That Lock from September of 2015. Following the release of Rattle That Lock in 2015, David Gilmour set out to play a series of concerts in historic venues across the world. On July 7th and 8th, 2016, David Gilmour performed two spectacular shows at the legendary Pompeii Amphitheatre in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, 45 years after he first played there for Adrian Maben's classic film Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii. The concerts were the first-ever rock performances played to an audience in the ancient Roman amphitheater, which was built in 90 BC and entombed in ash when Vesuvius erupted in AD 79. David Gilmour is the only performer to play to an audience in the arena since the time of the gladiators, almost 2,000 years ago. Speaking about the Pompeii shows David Gilmour commented 'It's a magical place and coming back and seeing the stage and the arena was quite overwhelming. It's a place of ghosts...' Includes songs from throughout David's career including the title tracks of his two most recent #1 solo albums: Rattle That Lock and On An Island. Also included are other solo and Pink Floyd classics such as 'Wish You Were Here,' 'Comfortably Numb' and 'One Of These Days,' the only song that was also performed by the band in 1971. Both concerts also saw extraordinary performances of 'The Great Gig In The Sky' from The Dark Side Of The Moon, which David rarely plays as a solo artist. The concert performance film, David Gilmour Live at Pompeii, was shot in 4k by director Gavin Elder and includes highlights from both shows. The concert is a spectacular audio-visual experience, featuring the famous huge circular cyclorama screen as well as lasers, pyrotechnics and stellar performances from an all-star band.

There are 22 songs on the 2 CDs of Live at Pompeii, which documents the shows David played in Pompeii for the first time since he played there in 1971 with the rest of Pink Floyd. I almost saw the Rattle That Lock tour but illness prevented me from seeing the US Tour (had laryngitis and the flu which torpedoed my plans to see David outside Pink Floyd but he may tour again in the future so if that happens I will see him).
Gilmour this time was backed onstage by bass player Guy Pratt and drummer Steve DiStanislao (whom were the lone two members of David's On an Island Tour band still with David after the US leg of the Rattle That Lock tour which saw the departures of Phil Manzanera, Jon Carin and Kevin McAlea) and replacing Phil Manzanera was Chester Kamen (who played with David at Live Aid in Bryan Ferry's band), replacing Jon Carin (who went to Roger Waters' band for Roger's Milli Vanilli type lip syncing extravaganza) was keyboard legend Greg Phillingaines and Rolling Stones veteran Chuck Leavell (filled in for McAlea), replacing Dick Parry was Joao Mello on saxophones and guitar and extra keyboards and backing singers Bryan Chambers, Louise Marshall and Lucita Jules.
The first CD begins with "5 AM" which sets the mood nicely before going into a spirited version of Rattle That Lock's title song and David at 70 still sings great and his solos are excellent as always. "Faces of Stone" is next and is just as amazing as the version on Rattle That Lock. Then he pulls out a spirited "What Do You Want From Me?" which is just as good as the version on PULSE. Next was "The Blue" which was the first of a three or so song tribute to David's late Floyd bandmate Rick Wright (Rick sang backups on the studio version) and we follow with The Dark Side of the Moon track of Rick's being "The Great Gig In the Sky" which is emotionally with the three singers adding their own take on Clare Torry's vocal (Lucita hits the Clare Torry notes, Louise oohed the high notes and Bryan added his own flavor to it) and this was only the second time they played the song as the first night was not used due to some mistakes and lastly "A Boat Lies Waiting" which has Rick's voice at the intro. Next is "Wish You Were Here" and a great version. Then "Money" which has some excellent playing from David and a stellar version. "In Any Tongue" follows and this song was my favorite on the Rattle That Lock album and the solo on this version smokes. "High Hopes" follows and is an awesome version and I love the classical guitar solo outro which moves me everytime. We end the first CD with "One Of These Days" which David had not played live much before Pompeii and is the lone song from the 1971 Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii concerts that appears here.
The second disc starts with a haunting "Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts 1-5)" which has Greg Phillingaines recreating Rick's Moog solo with his own style and great performance by David and he may have modified his high notes but done stellar. Then it's followed by spirited versions of "Fat Old Sun", "Coming Back to Life" and "On an Island". "The Girl in the Yellow Dress" was played but none of the versions were used because David was not too happy with them I suppose. "Today" is next and is an amazing version which worked live. Then we have "Sorrow" which is another winner and a great song which goes down live superbly (the PULSE and Delicate Sound versions are hard to top). The set ends with a spellbinding version of "Run Like Hell" and Greg's synth solo was done superbly and David and Guy sing superbly although they are older than their PULSE selves."Time/Breathe Reprise" is next and David sings with Greg Phillingaines and both do a phenomenal job. CD 2 ends with a great version of "Comfortably Numb" with Chuck Leavell singing Roger's parts brilliantly and David delivering as always.
Some were crying that David didn't play "Echoes" but he retired the song from live performances after Rick Wright passed away in 2008.
This was also released as a 2-CD/2-BluRay edition and is stunning and a reminder of what I missed due to being ill last year.
Live in Pompeii is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
