Earthquakes often precede eruptions, sometimes by only hours, and sometimes by several months. While most seismic activity at volcanoes is not necessarily followed by an eruption, almost all eruptions are preceded and sometimes accompanied by earthquake activity at shallow depths near the volcano. Therefore, recording earthquakes near active and dormant volcanoes is an important tool in monitoring and eruption prediction.
The following is a list of recently recorded quakes near volcanoes, at magnitudes larger than 1.5, depths below 25 km within 25 km radius. Coverage is good to near-complete for volcanoes in the European and North American regions. For most other areas, the international agencies (USGS, EMSC etc) can only provide earthquake data for quakes >M3-4, but any larger quake near a volcano should be registered.
