Synopsis

An adaptation of Willa Cather's novel about a young woman's struggle to achieve her destiny -- a struggle that takes her from a small Colorado town to the opera stages of the world. Thea Kronborg, a talented and beautiful young woman growing up in 1890s Colorado, travels to Chicago to make or break her musical career. A succession of men aids her in this quest: Herr Wunsch, an alcoholic piano teacher who nurtures her life's passion of music; Dr. Archie, Thea's patron and ardent admirer; Fred Ottenburg, the millionaire love of Thea's life, who hides a calamitous secret; Ray Kennedy, an infatuated railroad worker who leaves Thea his life savings after his sudden death; Spanish Johnny, a guitar-playing free-spirit in Thea's hometown; and Andor Harsanyi, a kind-hearted Chicago music teacher who convinces Thea to give up piano to concentrate on voice training with the egotistical singing coach Madison Bowers.
