After Rajinikanth didn’t attend Raghuvaran’s funeral, late actor’s mother wrote the Superstar a letter, but ‘chose not to send it’

A new interview with late actor Raghuvaran’s mother Kasthuri and younger brother Ramesh has become a talking point online, after they spoke about the equation he shared with Superstar Rajinikanth. Raghuvaran, who passed away in 2008 due to multiple organ failure as a result of alcohol abuse, was best known for playing villainous characters in films starring Rajinikanth, and was regarded as the perfect foil to the Superstar.

Even Rajinikanth himself had said the same at the audio launch of his film Kaala. Apart from sharing great chemistry onscreen, the two were good friends in real life, according to Raghuvaran’s brother. “Rajini sir used to say that he can perform well if he has Raghuvaran as his villain… standing opposite to him. He would call my brother during lunch breaks on the sets to talk,” he said.

Raghuvaran once told Rajini to stop portraying violence onscreen. “Sir, you quit all this fighting in your films. You go and act as a peacemaker by stopping all the fights that take place outside on the streets. This will take you to the next level.’ Rajini sir would then laugh in his trademark style,” Ramesh said. Despite their great bond, Rajinikanth’s absence at Raghuvaran’s funeral raised eyebrows. “Everyone in the industry came except Rajini sir. He was in a shoot outside the city. Everyone else came. I wrote a letter to Rajinikanth later, but I decided not to send it. He is a big personality, and I didn’t want to disturb him,” she shared.

When she was asked about the contents of the letter, Kasthuri said, “I wrote that they were good friends but things turned out this way. And he (Raghuvaran) felt Dhanush (Rajini’s ex-son-in-law) was like a son to him and loved working with him in Yaaradi Nee Mohini. God has punished him… about what has happened.” she said. She added, “However, whenever we meet him, he will talk with a lot of respect. At a wedding, Rajini invited only us (her and Raghuvaran’s dad) to meet in person.” Meanwhile, several reports claim that Rajinikanth didn’t attend the funeral because he couldn’t bear the loss of his dear friend.

Raghuvaran, who passed away at the age of 49, has left behind a significant body of work. He has been part of popular films such as Mani Ratnam’s Anjali, Shankar’s Mudhalvan, and Sundar C’s Arunachalam. He is best known for the psychopathic character he played in KS Ravikumar’s Tamil directorial debut Puriyaadha Pudhir. Raghuvaran was married to actress Rohini in 1996. The couple separated in 2004. They had a son named Rishi in 2000.
