SES (SCSI Enclosure Services) is used to get external drive volume info, turn on password protection and LED controls.
The SES driver will auto install when the drive is attached and found if drivers are not installed.
IMPORTANT:
Newer WD SES Drivers are NOT available for download from Western Digital.
They are ONLY available through Windows or macOS updates.
Resolution
Check the drive for errors to make sure it is not failed.
Update Windows or macOS to get the latest drivers.

- The WD SES Driver is not required for the drive to be recognized by Windows.

- Download the legacy WD SES Drivers.
- Unzip WD_SES_Driver_Setup_x86.zip, or the WD_SES_Driver_Setup_x64.zip.
- Click the WD SES Driver Setup (x86).msi, or the WD SES Driver (x64) .msi file.
- Click Next.
- Click Next again.
- Click Install.
- Click Finish.
Wait for the install to complete. |
Restart Windows before using the external hard drive if prompt to do so. |
Update Windows 11 and 10
- Connect the external drive to the computer.
- Type Windows Update in the search bar.
- Click Check for updates.
- Click Advanced Options.
Click Optional Updates or View Optional Updates.
- Select Western Digital Technologies - WDC-SAM if listed.
Click Download and Install.
