What's generally the best strategy for tower defense games?

So I've been hooked on tower defense games lately, and I always reach a point where I get stuck. So, my dilemma is this: is it better to build lots of low level units, or is it better to build fewer units that are highly upgraded? I can't seem to decide, and doing something in the middle does not work. What does reddit think?

In games like Fieldrunners, where you can build your towers most anywhere, I use a lot of low level units to make a maze and slow down enemy units, then start upgrading from there. In games like Kingdom Rush, I build and upgrade on good tower spots that can hit enemies for longer or often. Hope this helps.

I get it. So build a bunch of units, and then upgrade the ones that are most strategically located. Sounds simple enough...

I only play the warcraft TDs and the best strategy in my opinion is to build you'r units in zigzag patterns to make the Creeps az slowly as possible :) And never forget upgrading is always better than buying new units....

That's generally what I find works best too. I've been playing a freebie on my phone called "Radiant Defense." You don't exactly get to put your units anywhere, but you can customize your maze a little bit.

The only rule that I can think of that covers all TD games is as follows:

  • Upgrading existing towers is more effective than buying new towers.

gotcha. Thanks, this is helpful.
