Jim Gilmour was born in Scotland, but his family moved to Canada while he was still a child. He began playing accordion at the age of nine and the piano at the age of seventeen. He also learned to play the clarinet. Inspired by Eddie Jobson and his band UK, he briefly performed as lead vocalist and keyboardist in a Prog-Jazz band which featured GENTLE GIANT and STEELY DAN songs.
He joined the band SAGA just before that band recorded its third album "Silent Knight" as its keyboardist, replacing prior keyboardist Greg Chadd. In the 1980's, during a hiatus from the band SAGA, Gilmour and band drummer Steve Negus formed GNP (The Gilmour Negus Project), featuring vocalist Robert Bevan, which released one album "Safety Zone" in 1987.
Gilmour released his first solo album, an all-instrumental affair inspired by the likes of Vangelis and Yanni in 1996, entitled "Instrumental Encounters." It would take another ten years before Gilmour would release his second solo album, "Great Escape" in 2006. This album included 11 songs, and unlike his first solo album, about half of those were vocal tracks. The album was inspired by his many camping trips in Canadian wildernesses. He continues to play keyboards and sing the occasional lead vocals with SAGA to this day.

Great Escape is his second release, and is somewhat a departure from what he usually do.
It is obvious from the start that Gilmour has a fascination for jazz and fusion, as most songs here are to a smaller or larger degree spiced with influences from those genres - in style, composition or performance.
Apart from that, this is a release that showcases Gilmour's capabilities as a keyboard player - as would be expected.
Somewhat varied in quality, but there's enough good tracks here to make this one worthwhile checking out.
