Barrett, Michael C. Preeminent Dallas attorney, businessman and philanthropist, passed away peacefully at home Sunday, January 11, 2009. Greatly respected and admired by his peers, Michael was a man of remarkable generosity who achieved excellence in everything he undertook while inspiring and challenging others to excel. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, and raised in Sherman, Texas, Michael was the son of stockbroker Harry V. Barrett Jr. and high school English teacher Cloriene Slaughter Barrett. His parents engendered a love of literature that accompanied Michael his entire life. He graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington and Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law. A world-class collector of military memorabilia, custom car enthusiast and big game hunter, Michael is credited with several Safari Club International world records, including a January 2009 award for the No. 2 elk in the world. A member of the Executive Advisory Board of Frost Bank Group, Michael also served on the Executive Board of the Dedman School of Law at Southern Methodist University, where he established the Jean Kyle Jury Award. Michael was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the United States Courts of Appeal for the Fifth and Eleventh Circuits, and the Supreme Courts of Texas and Colorado, as well as every federal district court in Texas. He was a Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation, American College of Mortgage Attorneys, and State Bar of Texas. Michael was one of the rare attorneys to be Board Certified in Civil Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, and he also served as a frequent advisor on mortgage banking issues for the Texas Supreme Court and Texas Legislature. His passionate support for many charitable and public service organizations included work with Hope's Door, KickStart and Dallas Junior Forum. An avid supporter of veterans causes and the Addison Police Department, Michael also founded BDF Homeworks Foundation to provide key financial support to many local charities. Jackie,
It was with great sadness that we received word of Mike's passing. I will always think so highly of him - a wonderful man, great patron of the engraver's art and truly, a generous man of honor and integrity! In our book he was absolutely "one of a kind" and will live on in our memory! Our thoughts and prayers are with you,

Jackie & family & law firm-
I was so shocked and saddened to learn of Mike's sudden passing. Mike was an amazing person, a true teacher and leader. He was such a brilliant man, but never made me feel like my thoughts and time were anything less than his. He could light up a room or a conversation with ease.

Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you all through this difficult time.

HE IS NOT DEAD...
I cannot say, and I will not say
That he is dead. He is just away.
With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand,
He has wandered into an unknown land
And left us dreaming how very fair
It needs must be, since he lingers there.
And you--oh, you, who the wildest yearn
For an old-time step, and the glad return,
Think of him faring on, as dear
In the love of There as the love of Here.
Think of him still as the same, I say,
He is not dead--he is just away.
