Everyone in Painters Mill knows the abandoned Hochstetler farm is haunted. But only a handful of the residents remember the terrible secrets lost in the muted/hushed whispers of time―and now death is stalking them, seemingly from the grave.
On a late-night shift, Chief of Police Kate Burkholder is called to the scene of an apparent suicide―an old man found hanging from the rafters in his dilapidated barn. But evidence quickly points to murder and Kate finds herself chasing a singularly difficult and elusive trail of evidence that somehow points back to the tragedy of that long ago incident. Meanwhile, Kate has moved in with state agent John Tomasetti and for the first time in so long, they're both happy; a bliss quickly shattered when one of the men responsible for the murders of Tomasetti's family four years ago is found not guilty, and walks away a free man. Will Tomasetti be pulled back to his own haunted past?
When a second man is found dead―also seemingly by his own hand―Kate discovers a link in the case that sends the investigation in a direction no one could imagine and revealing the horrifying truth of what really happened that terrible night thirty-five years ago, when an Amish father and his four children perished―and his young wife disappeared without a trace.
And, as Kate knows―the past never truly dies . . . in The Dead Will Tell by Linda Castillo

Thirty-five years later, Chief Kate Burkholder was called to the scene of an apparent suicide. Kate and Coroner Dr. Coblentz arrived at the same time. A man was hanging by his neck from the rafters of his barn. There was biohazard beneath the body that the technician positively identified as blood. Too much blood for a hanging. The fire-fighters brought the deceased down from the rafters when it was observed that the man had not committed suicide after all. He was murdered. Kate found an Amish peg doll and under its base: "HOCHSTETLER!" There had been two other murders with the same modus operandi, including an Amish peg doll with "HOCHSTETLER." All three victims had received notes before they were murdered. The thirty-five year old robbery, arson and murders at the Hochstetler farm is still an open case. Kate believes that case and the three recent murders are related, and pulled out the old case files.
The Dead Will Tell is the sixth book in the Chief Kate Burkholder series. Finally, Kate and FBI Agent John Tomasetti let go of their pasts. Their personal relationship is humanized in their character role, making the story-line believable. I am already looking forward to the next book in author Linda Castillo Chief Kate Burkholder series.
THE STORY: Kate Burkholder. chief of police in a small town, and her team are called to an apparent suicide. A man hanging from the rafters of his barn seems obvious but quickly the investigation turns to murder when it is discovered that the man was shot. His murder seems connected an 35 year old crime -- the horrendous murders that decimated most of an Amish family. It seems like a ghost has come back for revenge. At the same time, Kate's personal life seems to be going well until her lover John gets news that one of the men connected with the death of his family has gone free.
OPINION: This book excels because of the connection between the revenge crime Kate is investigating and John's own feelings for revenge. This book is all about how the past never really dies. Kate and John are in a good place as this book begins, but the crisis that arises shows that there are still problems that they have with trust. Kate doesn't trust John not to seek revenge -- because he has before -- and John cannot truly talk with Kate. There are some very interesting parallels with the investigation (I won't say more to not give away spoilers). These connections raise this book to a level beyond a standard mystery.
WORTH MENTIONING: This book takes place six months after the previous book in the series.
CONNECTED BOOKS: THE DEAD WILL TELL is the sixth book in the Kate Burkholder series. It can be read as a standalone although there are some ongoing stories which are secondary to the main mystery.
STAR RATING: I give this book 4.5 stars.
When pillars of the community begin getting threatening notes, alluding to serious past transgressions, and they start going belly up in a series of murders, Chief Burkholder discovers a tie to a thirty-five year cold case, where an Amish father and four of his children were tragically killed during a home invasion, and the children's mother was taken, only to vanish without a trace. Only one child survived that horrific night.
As Chief Burkholder starts putting the pieces together, what emerges is a true horror story, as past and present collide. This is definitely a harrowing tales of murder among the Amish. Since I enjoy stories about the Amish, as well as cozy murder mysteries and police procedurals, I love this series of books. This one certainly kept me turning the pages.

Dale Michaels, a fifty something grandfather is found hanging in his barn. A pillar of the community with no known enemies, he is first thought to have committed suicide until they find the gunshot wounds and a clue linking him to a 35 year old crime. Then another body is found with a similar clue. In the meantime Kate's partner, John Tomasetti, is dealing with the fact that one of the murderers of his family has got off on a technicality.
The Dead Will Tell is a slightly old fashioned novel in the sense that whilst it is ostensibly a police procedural there is little emphasis on forensics and much on gathering information but that seems to suit the rural, Amish setting. Kate is a good protagonist, she's likeable and very human. Her relationship with Tomasetti keeps her slightly on edge as he's not the easiest man to deal with, something I'm sure we can all relate to and she's determined to do a good job, despite her troubles with the council or is it in spite of and keep her community safe. I would, however, say that she is a bit thick in not spotting the link between the victims sooner when it screams off the page (it wouldn't suit the plot) but this is a minor niggle.
I liked The Dead Will Tell and have no hesitation in recommending it as a good read. As usual with this series it is informative on the Amish community and their way of life and it has a twist at the end - I would never have guessed the perpetrator in a million years.
The story is compelling and the author does try to show the results of the long-ago crime on the survivor and on the perpetrators of the murder. She falls short of saying that all should be forgiven but she does examine the consequences of what happened and how it continues to affect everyone involved. The resolution of the mystery will need a small suspension of disbelief as it is slightly implausible but all in all it is very well done and captivating reading. I can never work out exactly where the author's sympathies lie - whether she is or is not a fan of the Amish way of life - I presume that it is her intention to show both the good and the bad of the faith and its adherents and this open mindedness adds depth to the story.
Kate herself is still in a relationship with John Tomasetti. In this book Tomasetti finds out that the man who was almost certainly responsible for the death of his wife and children has been released from prison. His desire for revenge is compared with the murder that Kate is investigating and it also begins to cause a rift to form between the couple.
This is an intelligent and compelling crime novel set in an interesting community and with lots to think about.
Besides Caitlyn & Linda, there is Wanda Brunstetter, Beverley Lewis, Marta Perry etc etc. I buy all of their books here on to name a few fantastic authors 🖊📝 I really enjoy reading their books! This particular story of Linda Castillo's -The Dead Will Tell was so totally awesome!! I enjoyed every page I read 📖! I have read do many of her other books 📚 & never have been disappointed. Just like this one!! If this was a rating system from 1 to 10, I'd definitely give this book a 10!!! 👍🏻👏🏻
Happy reading book lovers! 😊
This story takes you back to a thirtyfive year old cold case in which an Amish family were the victims of a robbery gone wrong. The father was shot dead, four of the five young children were burnt to death and the wife, who is never seen again, is, also assumed dead.
Kate remembers hearing rumours and ghost stories about the Hochstetler family as a child, but the case was never solved.
Now residents of Painters Mill are being brutally murdered and the only thing that links them is this old case. Could that mean someone knows who it was that awful night? and if that's true, why wait so long for revenge? Kate knows someone's hiding something, and she'll do whatever it takes to find out what it is.
I really love this series. It's the Amish town angle that set's them apart from all the other's. From the very first book you fall in love with the ex Amish police chief with a big secret. You get just as excited reading about what's going on in her personal life as you do the cases, her and her loyal team working on. I hope it's not to long before the seventh in the series is available. I'll be counting down the days.
