81. Tori's seismic tension (2015 CD reissue)
Never one to follow rules or trends, Tori Amos finally decides to jump on the reissues wagon at her own time. Long overdue, she reintroduces her first couple of albums, presenting 2 of the most important reissues in recent years, both curated by herself. As an artist who cannot be fully experienced only by her A-Side songs, and boasting a back catalogue of superb B-Sides, and unreleased material which often surpasses the value of album tracks, this new deluxe edition of her "Little earthquakes" debut collects the album's original 12 songs, plus an extra disc of 12 B-Side gems, 5 live performances, and her legendary cover of Nirvana's "Smells like teen spirit". A most splendid selection and content, considering the extraordinary quality of the material, most of which previously featured only on individual CD singles.Every track on here is remastered for the first time, enhancing the beautiful arrangements, allowing the instrumentation to truly shine (the mesmerising "Girl", and the electrifying "Precious things" are just some of the tracks which are greatly benefited from the remastering), with Tori's voice sounding crystal clear. Presented with extensive artwork (which, strangely enough, omits the original back cover photo of the pallic mushrooms), liner notes, and housed in a beautifully designed 8-panel gatefold digipack, everything - from the arresting cover images of Tori and her miniature piano, to the actual songs - is assembled with detail and care, honouring this classic album with one of this year's most essential reissues. New listeners should buy this in complete confidence, Toriphiles I am sure have already done so.Following the Y Kant Tori Read album, "Little earthquakes" is the solo record that introduced to a wider audience the fiery, red-blooded redhead, who brought the piano back to the forefront of cutting-edge rock, and went on to become one of the most influential artists of her generation. Ripping her heart open, and bearing her soul for all to see, Tori addresses her audience through her unique storytelling an array of issues, such as relationships, femininity, religion, empowerment, sexuality, and family. Each song tells a story, every story is more intruiging than the other. There is such disarming honesty and astounding intensity in these songs that it becomes apparent upon first listen that "Earthquakes" was destined to define an era, and inspire a whole generation of female singer/songwriters.From the glorious pulsating opener, "Crucify" (the unedited single version of which is still to be found only on "A piano: The collection" box set), to the magnificent climactic closing title-track, there is not a single track not dripping with emotion, evoking striking and unforgettable images, or failing to engage its listeneners in so many ways (a mention is due for the shockingly bruising "Me and a gun", a stark account of Amos' own experience of being raped, performed acapella). Although on subsequent releases she, admittedly, developed a tendency to over-indulge, Tori's songrwriting genius and emotional clarity are best showcased on this album, which remains among her most accomplished and enduring works. Complexly structured, finely executed, utterly emotional, and deeply confessional, brave, bold, blazing, brutal, these "Little earthquakes" are simply shattering.***** for the album***** for this edition

This was the first Tori Amos album I ever heard in full. At first, I wasn't sure if I liked it. I didn't see much that set it apart from any other album I owned. But as I listened to it more, I began to realize that there was something special about it that I had missed in the first listen. I think it was something to do with her lyrics at first. I'm a sucker for good lyric writing. And then her voice and the piano, two things I am also a sucker for. After the second time I had listened to this album all the way through, it became a quiet obsession of mine. Her lyrics and vocals make this out to be an album that's too personal not to have an emotional affect on the listener.

Crucify - 5/5. The second verse contains some of my favorite lyrics on this album. The song is a great album opener. It's a song about insecurity and, ultimately, empowerment. It's an excellent way to set the mood for an honest and introspective album.
Girl - 5/5. Girl continues the theme of Crucify. It's a touching song about a woman (either Tori herself or a friend, it goes back and forth) the narrator hopes will someday learn to put herself first. It's a personal, vulnerable song.
Silent All These Years - 5/5. Another simple song about breaking out of your shell and putting your needs as a priority.
Precious Things - 5/5. The first track where the raw emotion turns to anger. It's a beautiful, furious piece.
Winter - 5/5. Because of my close relationship with my own amazing father, this song always makes me tear up. You don't have to have an emotional connection to the situation for the song to have an affect on you though. It's a heartfelt tribute to her father and their complicated relationship.
Happy Phantom - 5/5. A very bubbly, joyful song about death, that manages to handle the topic with the seriousness it brings up. What's not to love there?
China - 4/5. China is a sad, beautiful song. It's one of the ones I don't listen to as much though. You have to be in the right mood. It drags a little, in my opinion.
Leather - 5/5. Despite it's title and the opening lines, the song is not what I would call sexy. It's actually a fairly sad song, but it's an amazing sad song. And allows some of Amos's humor to shine through in places.
Mother - 5/5. A complicated and bittersweet song. Longer than China, but easier to listen to all the way through.
Tear In Your Hand - 3/5. Once again, allows for some humor in a sad situation. It's catchy, but one of the weaker tracks.
Me And A Gun - 5/5. This is not the kind of song you just listen to. It's hard to get through. It's a brutal song about an awful experience. The fact that Amos can write a song about something so traumatic and not just use it as shock value is what makes this so amazing.
Little Earthquakes - 4/4. The title track is worth listening to, but it goes on longer that it probably should.

I guess some fans will disagree, but this is clearly her best and most prestigious album. Everything went right here, and that is something of an underestimation in describing how beautiful this record remains to this day.

It's full of great songs front to back, and it rarely gets old for this dude. With that out of the way, I must say these are some damn fine remasters as well. The original CD was decent, but this one retains great dynamic range at around DR10 while making everything clearer and more robust.

I have the original in digital FLAC, and while being lazy one day I decided to listen to that one, and it just doesn't have the clarity I need after listening to this version. It sounds limp in places compared to what we have here. She seems more distant and smeared, and the bass is lacking depth. With this one plugged into quality headphones and a nice amp, I don't suppose anyone could wish for much more.

They did a tremendous job here. Nearly perfect. If you are a fan, the extra tracks will probably be worth it alone, but the remaster here is the best part for me. It's exactly how a remaster should be done. Better scan, better EQ, and a fundamental clarity that you simply could not pull off in the early 90s.

I can honestly say that this changed my life. I first purchase this CD on my 15th birthday after hearing the title track at a dance recital. I had no idea that this woman and her piano was going to impact me the way that she did. This album hits you hard in the feels and speaks the truths that we not only hide from others, From the opening track, "Crucify", you know you are in for a true artist confession. Amos asks the greatest question that anyone who has felt like a doormat or invisible : "why do we crucify ourselves?" She dives into questions about what it means to be a woman, what it means to be an outcast without a voice, and also confesses about her rape that occurred by a fan after a show one night.
This version is amazing because not only has it been remastered and sounds fantastic, but it also includes a multitude of B-side songs that were not all previously available in the US. There is easily enough for an entire extra album and these songs are as good, if not better, than the ones that made the first disk.

Key Songs to Check out: Crucify, Silent All These Years, Precious Things, Winter, Mother, Tear in Your Hand, Me and a Gun, Little Earthquakes, Flying Dutchman, Here. in my Head, Upside Down, Take to the Sky, and her cover of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Tori Amos is one of the rare artists who excel at almost everything -- singing, songwriting, melody, beat, arrangement, vocal quality. She's in league with the best: Cole Porter, David Wilcox, Joni Mitchell. Her songs are fiercely feminine with a creative individuality taking surprising turns and twists. That sometimes her choruses and bridges within songs turn so unexpectedly that they're not always recognizable as integral to the song is sometimes a delight, because they continually catch the listener off balance. The effect is a heightened sense of freedom -- that Tori Amos can go ANYWHERE and make it work musically. She's mastered the difficult art of making the piano sound crisp and clear while bringing out it's wonderful percussive qualities. Her best song is "Winter", a tour-de-force of haunting quality and lyrical power which will stick in listener's minds with cold imagery while Amos shifts her perspective as a young girl facing the scary prospect of rapid adolescence to her father encouraging her to love herself. Some lyrics are a touch confusing, like New Yorker poems, but her sharp, distinct voice is a pleasure. Terrific album! Five stars!!!!!
