Summary

In September of 1775, the Third Provincial Congress divided the state into six military districts. These districts were each comprised of a number of counties surrounding a significant town and corresponded with existing judicial districts: Edenton, Halifax, Hillsborough, New Bern, Salisbury, and Wilmington. Later, one additional district was added, further dividing the mountainous western part of the state, which was much later ceded to Tennessee.[1]


By September 9, 1775, the 35 Counties Fielded Their Regiments of Militia:

The following addions and changes were made

  • Rowan County Regiment split into 1st Rowan Regiment and 2nd Rowan Regiment, October 22, 1775
  • Pasquotank Regiments split into 1st and 2ND Regiments, December 22, 1775
  • Col. John Ashe, Sr. created his own small regiment of hand-picked men - the short lived Volunteer Independent Rangers in Feb 1776

  • Northern Orange Regiment created on April 22, 1776,profiles
  • Six (6) New Brigades of Militia Created on May 4, 1776:
  • Washington District Regiment created on December 23, 1776,profiles
  • On May 9, 1777, the NC General Assembly created three new counties.
    • The 2nd Pasquotank County Regiment became the newly-created Camden County Regiment,profiles.
    • The 2nd Rowan County Regiment became the newly-created Burke County Regiment,profiles.
    • The Northern Orange County Regiment became the newly-created Caswell County Regiment,profiles.
    • The Southern Orange County Regiment reverted back to simply the Orange County Regiment,profiles. There were now 39 counties and 39 regiments of Militia within the State.
  • On February 8, 1779, the NC General Assembly created Lincoln County and its regiment of Militia out of part of Tryon County and its regiment of Militia, which was abolished. All officers were appointed and commissioned by the Governor. The Lincoln County Regiment was active until the end of the war., profiles[30]
