Vielleicht vergebe ich 5 Sterne weil dieses Album Jugenderinnerungen weckt. Nein, nicht nur. Dieses Album klingt unkommerziell (ausgenommen der Titel Nikita) und ist stilistisch abwechslungsreich. Mein Favorit ist die Ballade Cry to Heaven. Schade, dass es den seinerzeit auf der Kassette veröffentlichten Titel Act of War (Duett mit Millie Jackson) auf CD und Download nicht mehr gibt. Dennoch, ein abwechslungsreich schönes Album.

Elton's career has had its ups and downs, but this album came at a time when he was in top form. It followed Breaking hearts (featuring Sad songs say so much, Passengers) and that in turn followed Too low for zero (featuring I'm still standing, I guess that's why they call it the blues). Both of those albums contained some fine album tracks as well as those major hit singles and some lesser hits, and this album followed the pattern. Gus Dudgeon, producer of Elton's albums from his classic 1970 to 1976 period, returned to that position for this album.

The biggest hit here was Nikita, which by making the UK top three, was Elton's biggest UK hit for nearly ten years, although he'd had plenty of UK top ten hits in between. Nikita also made the top ten in America. The follow-up single from this album, Wrap her up made the top twenty on both sides of the Atlantic without capturing the public imagination to the extend of its predecessor. Both hits featured George Michael on backing vocals. A third single from the album, Cry to heaven, became a minor UK hit. By that time, anybody who wanted the song probably had the album. Other great tracks on the album include This town, Tell me what the papers say and Candy by the pound.

When one thinks of Elton John's albums, this one isn't usually among the first to come to mind, but that's only because Elton recorded so many great albums. There is much to like about this album, which was expanded with this re-issue to include The man who never died (the B-side of Nikita), a live version of Restless (the studio version of which was the B-side of Wrap her up) and live versions of Sorry seems to be the hardest word and I'm still standing. This may not be the place to begin a collection of Elton's studio albums, but no serious Elton John fan should be without it.

In den 80ern haute Elton John jedes Jahr ein neues Album raus und war dementsprechend fleißig. 1985 war John jedoch bei vielen Fans und Kritikern qualitativ längst nicht mehr dort, wo er in den 70ern war. Dem würde ich zwar zustimmen, aber trotzdem hatte jedes Album immer mindestens einen Track, der mich sehr begeistert hat. Und Johns musikalische Qualitäten waren auch in seiner „schwachen“ Phase alles andere als schlecht. Ein weiteres gutes Beispiel dafür war sein 19. Studioalbum „Ice on Fire“. Mit einer Vielzahl von Musikern, darunter George Michael, veröffentlichte Elton John eine wirklich tolle Platte mit Schwung, Soul und Spaß.

Los geht’s mit „This Town“, ein toller, grooviger Einstieg. besonders toll gefallen mir die Bläser in dem Track, geben dem Ganzen einen wunderbaren Disco-Vibe. Die Band Sister Sledge ist hier übrigens im Background zu hören.
Es folgt eine Elton John-Ballade: „Cry to Heaven“. Und in meinen Augen eine gute mit einem schönen Refrain und kraftvollem Text von Bernie Taupin.
„Soul Glove“ ist klasse und einer meiner Favoriten! Soul ist das Wort, um den Song zu beschreiben, der Track hat einen wunderbaren Flow und tolle Backing Vocals (unter anderem mit Kiki Dee, mit der John „Don‘t Go Breaking my Heart“ gesungen hat).
„Nikita“ ist die wohl bekannteste Single aus dem Album und hat ebenfalls einige Promis dabei: Nik Kershaw („The Riddle“) und der große George Michael sind hier in den Backing Vocals zu hören. Ein absolut starker Titel, der sehr schön den Kitsch der 80er mit einbindet.
Mit „Too Young“ haben wir einen weiteren tollen Track, der mit seiner Thematik allerdings einen etwas kuriosen Beigeschmack hat. Irgendwie gibt es einige Songs in der Musikwelt, in denen es darum geht, dass der oder die Geliebte zu jung ist, zum Beispiel „Young Girl“ von Union Gap…
Ein weiteres Highlight findet sich dann in „Wrap Her Up“: Hier darf George Michael sogar richtig mitsingen und liefert mit Elton einen fetzigen Song ab, über all die berühmten Ladys, die man so kennt. Der Track haut ordentlich rein.
„Satellite“ hat hübsche Space-Vibes und „Tell Me What the Papers Say“ ist lockerer Feel-Good-Rock, wobei letzterer Track in meinen Augen der wohl schwächste Song auf dem Album ist.
Auch „Candy by the Pound“ ist ein locker leichter Song für zwischendurch ohne viel Anspruch. Hier merkt man, dass die zweite Hälfte des Albums einige schwächere Lieder beinhaltet, die nicht so ganz das Niveau der ersten Tracks erreichen.
„Shoot Down the Moon“ schließt dafür das Album mit einer weiteren schönen Ballade ab.

45 Minuten und wieder zehn runde Tracks gibt es in „Ice on Fire“. In späteren Re-Issues gab es dann wieder ein paar Bonus Tracks. Darunter einige Live-Aufnahmen von bekannten Chartstürmern wie „I‘m Still Standing“ und „Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word“.
Daneben gibt es aber noch zwei Songs, die bis dato noch nicht zu hören waren.
„The Man Who Never Died“ ist größtenteils instrumental und sehr atmosphärisch, aber „Act of War“ haut richtig rein mit einem Duett von John und Millie Jackson, die mit ihrer genialen Stimme dem Ganzen die nötige Würze gibt!

Fazit: Vom Publikum wurde „Ice on Fire“ mittelmäßig aufgenommen, aber wie so oft zeigt sich die wahre Qualität eines Albums erst über mehrere Jahrzehnte. Und das ist hier auch der Fall, wie ich finde. Die Platte hat zwar in der zweiten Hälfte ein paar schwächere Tracks, dennoch gibt es viele fantastische Hits!

Not quite happy with the Original 1985-version of this CD because of the low output volume, I had this 1998 remastered version in the 'save for later' part of my shopping cart. Out of production for a while though, I felt it was too expensive to buy as a replacement for the version I already had. Other Elton John-remasters, such as The Fox and Jump Up, had proven to be big improvements in the past.
Then finally a seller had a used version in good condition for a very reasonable price.. so.. I ordered. Wish I hadn't now. Apparently I didn't pay enough attention, but only on arrival I noticed the track "Act Of War" is omitted from this remaster. I probably focussed too much on the other (four) bonus tracks.
Worse though, this remaster is hardly any better than the Original version. It also has an output volume that is way too low, so one has to keep adjusting the volume after having listened to other CD's. In comparison only Elton's voice seems a bit clearer, but otherwise it really isn't worth te buy. Mainly because of the inclusion of "Act Of War" I have now decided to keep my Original 1985-version and will try to resell this remastered version.

Nostalgie quand tu nous tiens... J'avais cet album en cassette en 1985. Je l'aimais beaucoup y compris le titre Nikita qui était terrible à l'époque (la femme du clip...). C'est vrai qu'il n'y a pas le dernier titre "act of war" part 1, sur le cd de 1998. Pour moi ce n'est pas très grave car c'était celui que j'aimais le moins (mais je comprend que ça peut agacer...). Il est remplacé par une face B d'un 45 tour de l'époque qui est très jolie (hommage à john lennon) : the man who never died. Bref moi je conseille cet album que je considère comme un bon elton john.
A noter la présence de george michael (encore un très bon artiste qui nous a quitté beaucoup trop tôt) sur le titre "wrap her up".
Vraiment heureux de le réécouter.

I'm not a fan of Elton John particularly, and only know this and one other album, but I'm surprised it got a fairly lukewarm response. It has a lot of good songs, and sounds very mid-80s, which is great for those of us that love that era! Many of the tracks blend his writing skill brilliantly with a fairly synthesised sound: among the best are the opening This Town, which goes well with the last, Act Of War, even though they are very different in theme. Both feature soul stars - the first has Sister Sledge on backing vocals, the latter being a duet with Millie Jackson. This song was missed off the remastered version from 1999, but I think it's a great track, it has such energy in its tongue-in-cheek confrontation, and Millie's singing is electrifyingly fierce. Other highlights include Soul Glove, and a duet with George Michael, Wrap Her Up, which really makes you want to hear it through over and over. Too Young is interesting and has a certain emotional pull; Cry To Heaven touching - there seems to be a social awareness filtered through the album. The biggest hit was Nikita, which I find a bit MOR, but it clearly struck a chord in the era of the film Letter To Brezhnev. And what a great melody Shoot Down the Moon is - just quintessentially 1985 ...
