[22M] I just slept for 24 hours straight (Almost exactly), and it wasn't on purpose.

Hello doctors, I'll start with yesterday!

It was a mellow day. The only physical activity I did was walk to the nearby gas station for a soda (10 min walk), something of which I do all the time (4/5 times a week). I woke up at around 10am and mostly just played video games/watched Netflix all day, again something of which I do most definitely all the time (Any time I'm away from work basically, I know sad). Around 5pm I just got a wave of sleepy tiredness over me and decided after one or two more episodes of Netflix I'd go to sleep. This has happened before a few times, even after no physical activity, but never where I sleep for 24 hours. I didn't set an alarm though, because I had both yesterday and today off from work.

Right before I went to sleep at around 7pm, my mom knocked on the door and asked if I wanted any chicken she had made... I said yes I'll be right there, but then I guess I fell asleep, because it felt like 5 seconds later I got a knock on my door waking me up and again asking if I wanted some dinner. I didn't know an entire day had past, so when I walked out to see that the chicken was now salads I was a bit confused... I didn't say anything though, because the time was still correct (a little after 7pm), and I though maybe we'd eat salads and the chicken was coming a bit later? after about an hour, I said are we having chicken? My mom gave me a strange look and was like "Oh we have some left overs in the fridge. I can get some for you!"

It's now been an hour and a half after I woke up and I realized I slept for literally and almost exactly 24 hours.... Is something wrong?

Go see your Dr and get some physical labs drawn. Consider anemia vs thyroid vs depression vs stress vs nothing wrong.

More than anything I'm impressed you held your pee for 24 hours. Maybe you woke up a couple times to use the bathroom but dont remember.

u/LatrodectusGeometric avatar

In addition to this, a carbon monoxide detector would be a good idea.

Although the rest of the family was fine, so wouldn't they have also been affected if it were CO?

u/LatrodectusGeometric avatar

Not necessarily. If OP was youngest/shortest/home more/had a shorter bed, they might be the only one affected at first. In addition, first symptoms can be really variable, so other people may be affected and not realize it.

NAD. I would pretty much exactly say what what your comment did. But also I have heard people I know with no other medical issues say they’ve had this happen, not 24 hours but 16-18 or so, and never had it reoccur. See a doctor to be safe if you’re concerned, but if it doesn’t happen again and you feel fine otherwise I wouldn’t be too worried.

[deleted]
[deleted]

I’ve done it once, but it was after working 36 hours straight and I was extremely exhausted, so it seemed fitting.

My buddy slept 25 hours straight once but he had been up for nesrly 2 days playing video games.

u/handy-mandy avatar

Can confirm. Most I’ve ever slept was 18 hours. It happened 1 time and never again. This happened years ago.

[deleted]
[deleted]

I have managed 30ish hours of sleep (maybe 28?) BUT I hadn't slept in 80 hours because of finals.

Not healthy, but my ex was supposedly able to hold his pee for almost 2 days once. He doesn’t drink water at all, so.

He had also done this sleeping thing. He had insomnia and would go for a few weeks with little to no sleep and go through a “crash day”- he’d sleep 16-18 hours, but I know he once got to 23 and the only reason he woke up is his mom woke him up to check if he was dead.

[deleted]
[deleted]

Well if he keeps doing that he'll be peeing himself by the time he's 40.

How do you know he held his pee. Have you ever thought of the possibility that he wet the bed and is too embarrassed to admit it.

Get checked for mono— This is almost exactly what happened to me when I got mono. I didn’t have any other symptoms except that I slept for an entire day one day, which was SUPER abnormal for me, and then I was a little sleepy thereafter for about a week but nothing alarming. Got a blood test a month after that, thinking nothing of it, and it turned out I had mono.

Also, anemia will do that to you, as well. Just get your iron checked and have them check for mono.

Edit: NAD

Same! I once slept and slept as a teenager during summer break. A few weeks later, I had something else going on, and got bloodwork done.

They said I recently had mono and was anemic!

Are you sure you didn't just have a feverish 1-2 hour nap? Since it was while you were napping are you sure you didn't half dream that she said chicken instead of something else? Did you check that the dates are actually different, like looking at your bank statement for the soda purchase?

Could be depression related

[deleted]
[deleted]

I do have depression, but yes I definitely 100% triple checked the calendar and asked my mom about the different dinners

Why do these weird threads get tons of replies but people with debilitating chronic problems get zero ?

u/chocolateco0kie avatar

"What can cause people to sleep 24 hours" is a question that has some straightforward answers, the most correct being "see a doctor and ask for labs to be run"

Patients with debilitating chronic diseases have a long medical story, a series of different failed/successful treatments done through the years and requires much more than the first question... its more than anyone can offer here. This sub isn't meant to be an appointment with a medical professional.

It’s so isolating being horribly sick. Isolation is one of the best ways to torture people. Think about that for a while. It’s the game every single day to stay positive and act like a grown up about it all. Everyone suffers. It’s life. And some days we lose it and scream out to the ethers begging for help.

a girl I work with was diagnosed with cancer , I sit near her and we both get there early. She has had body parts removed, chemo, radiation and more chemo. I always tell her if I was her I would be on my couch in a ball crying and it amazes me she shows up for work everyday.

Every morning since it is just the two of us we say hi . The other day she was in her cubicle quietly weeping. All I could do was gently rub her back and tell her we all loved her. I felt so bad and literally could not think of anything else to say.

If you ever need someone to "talk" to please message me. I might say something dumb but I will keep you in my good thoughts and hope that you can recover your good health.

[deleted]
[deleted]

That made me cry before you ever offered. That’s my life. My kids dad caught me sobbing in the laundry room at five am a few days ago. And thank you I will. What I have is weird so most people don’t even believe me. Having to work to have a good life is another hard part. I’m sure I could somehow get government assistance but fuck that. Rotting away broke unable to do anything worthwhile. Thank you.

((hugs)) one of my good friends has this weird illness where she randomly passes out. Like goes into a a dead faint. Docs have no clue why.

She qualified for government assistance but like you said no way, it is starvation level. She can't drive due to the passing out but she does all kinds of odd jobs, to support her family the best she can.

I am going to tell her about your post because you and her were meant to be friends.

I can't even imagine how that feels. I didn't mean that people who suffer with chronic diseases shouldn't come here for help - OP asked why posts that are "simple" like this one get so much attention but the other ones more complex do not. That's all I was answering to: it's simply that - fewer people feel like it would be appropriate to give advice without seeing the bigger picture, or fewer people feel qualified to do so. A post can only offer so much info. Professionals can only do so much through the internet. And sometimes that's for the best - the ones who answer are the ones who have something to add and that would not be crossing any lines.

I hope you are doing well. I don't know what you've been dealing with, but I hope you will find support and love to face what has been affecting you.

This absolutely makes sense and what do you suggest we do? At this point I’m fighting blowing my brains out. I have kids. I don’t want to do this to them. I don’t want this to be their story. I’m lost. I have some weird froo froo genetic disorder that isn’t well understood. For whatever reason it or something else is destroying my body.

It is very concerning that you are fighting blowing your brains out. No one but you can judge the quality of your life with your health issues. Sometimes there is no diagnosis and all you can do is treat symptoms. Try to live in the moment and squeeze any bit of joy out of your life you can, I think it is a fallacy to try to survive waiting on some cure.

[deleted]
[deleted]

Exactly. Exactly. Exactly. Most of the time I can keep that in mind. And sometimes I fall apart and sob for days and post online begging for help. It’s also a fallacy to think we can stay perfectly sane and stable while dealing with horribly debilitating pain and whatever the heck you want to call a body being totally off. I’m great 50% of the time. My clients love me. I’m generally happy. I stay positive and don’t let feeling like shit get me down. But then things like last week happen and it feels like quicksand and I’m a terrified mess doing my best to do whatever I can to regain homeostasis. After eight years of feeling consistently pummeled by my body it’s getting harder and harder to stay positive. I meditate regularly. I have great relationships with my kids and their dad. Love my family. Have lots of animals I love. I take my dogs on long walks and have started running again. I eat really well. I am doing my best every single day to stay ahead of this. I’m incredibly proactive. And wow it’s a motherfucker like no other that can in no way shape or form be understood until you’ve lived it. Thankfully I’m getting my life to where I can work less and less.

[deleted]
[deleted]

We come off as crazy because it’s so stressful and terrifying. Please don’t expect us to be perfect cyborgs in light of this. I get western medicine hasn’t caught up with what I have. There’s nothing I can do other than take really good care of myself. It’s taken a long time to finally accept this. I keep hoping there’s someone out there who knows. So I keep posting because you never know. Someday someone might.

[deleted]
[deleted]

The majority of people with chronic illnesses despite appearing to be huge messes are actually incredibly hard working people fighting their asses off to stay ahead of something incredibly terrifying. It takes everything just to stay positive and not let it get you down.

I’d say a lot of people have anecdotes regarding this topic and it’s easy to talk/joke about, whereas with a chronic, life threatening illness, no one knows what to say.

why do you have posts from when you were “sleeping”

u/Ssw2twbu avatar

Did his family not check on him at all?? In 24 hours?

especially if his mom was waiting at the door. wouldn’t she ask him the next day at dinner why he didn’t let her in or respond to her at all after he said hold on

u/Ssw2twbu avatar

I feel like this doesn’t make any sense. Idk. But agree to get it checked out if true.

ya definitely if this happened he should definitely go get it checked out

Do you have proper ventilation in your room? If not you could be in a room with mostly carbon dioxide after a few hours.

Another possibility, although rare for a male, is bladder and/or kidney infection. Usually symptoms do not include tiredness or near narcoleptic episodes, but for me I can tell I have a bladder infection (whole life prone to them) before any other symptom because I will feel fine then suddenly feel an EXTREME need to sleep asap and can sleep a long time.

But nomatter the cause, you are probably dehydrated. Soda doesnt hydrate you.

[deleted]
[deleted]

Definitely don't drink enough water (lol drinking soda as we speak 😭😢), I feel completely normal now though waiting on insurance information from my parents to go to doctor for more testing

NAD.

  • TLDR; It could be due to meds, or it could be something else. Either way, go to the doctor and tell them about ALL medications you're taking, if you are taking any. These include ones you buy in stores such as Tylenol, herbal supplements such as melatonin or st. John's wort, marijuana or other substances such as heroine or cocaine, as well as if you are taking other people's medications. The medical staff is there to help treat and diagnose you, not get you into trouble.

  • Full length post:

Speaking from personal experience, but I was taking meds in high school that the doctor prescribed to me in middle school for insomnia. With what I know now though, it was for hypertension (high blood pressure). Which I didn't have. It caused my blood pressure to be so low that I would fall asleep and nobody could wake me up. I would sleep for anywhere between 24-48 hours.

So, my point is, are you taking medications? It could be causing you to have a very low blood pressure. If not, go to the doctor to get your blood pressure checked, and as others suggested, thyroid and other issues. Mind you, all medications have side effects and could be impacting your thyroid and other important organs too.

Don't just pass it off tho! Bc when I finally did wake up and was able to be productiveish, I got up and passed out and hit my head. I was fine but passing out in general can be very dangerous due to hitting your head, especially with a low blood pressure.

Bc of this medication, I got falsely diagnosed with POTS (Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) during HS. So if you are taking meds, and your doctor refers you out to another doctor, tell them about ALL the medications you're taking. Including over the counter, herbal supplements and unprescribed drugs, such as if you're taking other people's meds or marijuana, cocaine, etc. The healthcare professionals aren't there to report you to authorities, they are there to give you the best care possible and telling them this information is very important when prescribing medications, planning a course of treatment and when figuring out your diagnosis when something is wrong. Also tell them what your blood pressure is normally like, if you do know what it's like. Whether you normally have low, high or a normal range of blood pressure.

I hope this helped with any insight and I'm sorry it was so long!

Video games and tv can really over stimulate your brain and exhaust your eyes. You overworked your senses.

Second possibility: check your orifices. You were most likely kidnapped by aliens and had your memory wiped so you wouldn’t remember the butt probes!!

Obligatory NAD, but when I'm feeling lazy and don't leave the house for a couple of days and just watch Netflix at home, I find that I sleep much more (12 hours max) and I'm still sleepy. I've never slept for 24 hours, but it could be a sign that you need to get out of the house and do something. When I'm active and exercise regularly, I sleep better and for around 8 hours. 24 hours is still a long time, but maybe you should try to be more active or at least get out of the house more, it's healthy :)

on the sleep disorder front, if its periodic like this, and based on your age, there's a slim chance it might be Klein-Levin syndrome but thats very rare. Its the only sleep disorder that is periodic and mainly seen in teenagers and young adults - and mainly men

Outside shot but worth looking up the local KL association

NAD but wanted to share my personal experience. When I was around 17-18 years old I had a night (actually night and day) when I’ve slept 18 hours straight, no bathroom breaks. It was amazing. Never thought I had a problem and it never repeated unfortunately lol But I am a person that loves sleeping, I could sleep 13-14 hours on a daily basis if I had nothing to do

u/silkie404 avatar

Have we considered the (however small) possibility OP’s mom may have altered clocks?

How did your mom not wake you up?

Eh we don't really have a deep relationship. Don't talk that much. Most of the time I just get my dinner and go back to my room it's kind of complicated, but it's not weird that she didn't check up on me

By all means get checked out if you are worried but this used to happen to me and my brother when we were teens. He would do it a lot. Like maybe monthly. It happened to me a few times a year

u/MaraReySkywalker avatar

I've slept that long but it was after a 1000 mile trip via car after going through a hurricane... you should talk to a doctor, that is not normal in the least. No idea what could be wrong but something is.

hol up this isnt normal?

No it is not. Not me but even one of my friends used to get this. That was a one day thing but gradually the frequency increased, and we urged her to see a doctor. She was later on clinically diagnosed as depressed.

fuck

Considering I've had something very similar happen to me... I don't think it's BS at all

Totally not bs. I've had this happen in hs due to being prescribed high blood pressure medication for insomnia in middle school.

  • Short story: Got misdiagnosed in hs due to the medication prescribed to me in middle school. As an adult when I went to a Cardiologist for the diagnosis I thought I had, he figured out I was misdiagnosed and the medication I was taking was what was causing the symptoms of that diagnosis and caused me to sleep for 24-48 hours, passing out after getting up and everything else that led up to the misdiagnosis. The Cardiologist said had I taken that medication like my primary doctor prescribed, I would have died in middle school.

These things can definitely happen for all kinds of reasons.

What the hell...

My thought exactly. When are they rolling out the new comment restriction?

Why all the down votes? I have atypical narcolepsy/idiopathic hypersomnia and this is exactly what happens to me.

I didn't diagnose. I said "maybe narcolepsy."

And here we are with two narcoleptics confirming that this symptom occurs in this case.

I'm completely bewildered by the number of downvotes. I have some biophysics training, degree was physics. Being scientifically trained, I tend not to present anything as factual unless it's well supported.

I wasn't presenting anything as factual, hence "maybe" narcolepsy, meaning, "nonzero probability" and there is literally a nonzero probability that narcolepsy causes this sort of extensive sleep.

So, I literally implied something that is deductively factual (the fact being that there's a nonzero probability that sleeping for 24 hrs is a manifestation of narcolepsy) and I got a lot of downvotes.

So, yeah I think it was a biased flood of downvotes seeing the ticker tick down. I'm not saying it's even likely to be narcolepsy. It's just something to research the symptoms of, speak to the doctor and look out for in narrowing down the cause.

I'll stand by it since I had two narcolepsy sufferers confirm this symptom.

[deleted]
[deleted]

I was shocked at the -72.

It was just a possibility. I have sleep problems myself so I happened to read about a lot of sleep disorders and people with narcolepsy can have some pretty weird shit.

Suggesting things should never be a problem! As someone working in the medical profession, I don’t mind if people come to me with a “dr google” list that they’ve researched. What matters is if they LISTEN to me/the medical professional when I say “it’s probably not that BECAUSE” and not “well you the medical professional are wrong because google said”.

Well I'm definitely not one of those, so the downvotes were totally unnecessary... lol. I'm totally against not listening to the medical professional at the end of the day, outside of getting a second opinion.

I figure that since medical professionals have to remember so many things and have such a wide array of rote knowledge that coming with a list of possibilities is probably helpful.

Honestly this is the comment that makes the most sense. I find it odd that OP’s mother would care enough to call him for dinner, twice, but not enough to not check on him for an entire 24 hours. I can see her thinking “oh he slept through dinner, he must just be tired” but I‘d think she would at least check on him when he didn’t show up for breakfast or lunch. Wouldn’t she be a little concerned if she saw that he was in the same position wearing the same clothes? This could be verified by simply asking his mother.
