Ethics and Transparency Transparency is important to me. That’s why I released my taxes on June 1st– the people of CA-40 deserve a representative who is held accountable and held to the same ethical standard. Congresswoman Young Kim, however, has failed to pay taxes multiple times, has been accused of hiding income sources, and has a history of other ethical lapses. She has received thousands in illegal contributions and pocketed over $1million in tax-payer funded salary. Meanwhile, she has taken illegal contributions from high-level Chinese nationals connected with the Chinese Communist Party in 2020. Congresswoman Kim must release her tax returns.
Like many of you, I was shocked and saddened by the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the landmark ruling of Roe v. Wade. People in neighboring states are now dealing with the repercussions of this blatant attack on women. In my work as a physician, I have seen firsthand how personal these decisions are for people. The difficult decision of whether to terminate a pregnancy should remain between a patient and her physician – not the government. While I will fight to codify Roe v. Wade as federal law and fight to expand reproductive health care in Congress, Congresswoman Young Kim has consistently stood with the far right in trying to ban abortion rights and block access to reproductive care.
I have witnessed firsthand the destruction guns can cause while working in emergency rooms. We all have seen the terror they’ve caused nationwide as of late. While I support the second amendment, there is no doubt that we need to strengthen our gun safety laws. I will work to reinstate the assault weapons ban and pass background check legislation to protect our children and communities. But after each mass shooting in schools and churches, Congresswoman Kim has consistently opposed all of these common-sense efforts to make our country safer.
Many of our families struggle financially. This is why I will oppose any new tax on families. Instead, I think billionaires and large corporations should pay their fair share of taxes. Congresswoman Young Kim endorsed a $2 trillion dollar tax handout to corporations, while raising taxes on the middle class. She has voted against ensuring these entities pay their fair share, and would rather serve her corporate donors than help her constituents.
I believe in science, and that climate change is a very real threat to our way of life. I will fight attempts to expand offshore oil drilling in Orange County and protect our beaches so that future generations can enjoy everything our planet has to offer. I’ll fight to preserve our canyons and open spaces. But my opponent, Congresswoman Young Kim, has consistently supported expanding oil drilling off our pristine coastline. She has received thousands of dollars in Big Oil contributions just months before oil spilled onto our shores.
Too many of our families can’t keep up with the rising costs of housing, groceries, gas, and overall cost of living while seeing their incomes stay the same. We need more problem solvers in Congress who will fight to protect consumers against corporate price gouging. I will fight to reduce taxes for the middle class and eliminate tax breaks for special interest groups and big corporations who send production and jobs overseas. I will fight to increase American production of the things that are in most demand – housing, pharmaceutical drugs, microchips, and other important consumers goods, and I will fight to lower the cost of higher education, preschool and early childhood education, workforce training and other critical opportunities that help our families succeed.
Every person has the right to feel safe in their homes and communities. I believe that we must expand resources for community policing and hold violent criminals accountable. I support our law enforcement officers and think they are instrumental in protecting our communities. The federal government should support law enforcement and provide them with the tools and training necessary to do their jobs. I believe that agencies should be trained in de-escalation tactics and implicit biases. Cities and counties should also employ more on-call substance abuse counselors, mental health professionals, and social workers who would partner with law enforcement on calls where their expertise is required.
Those who have served in our military have put their lives on the line to keep our country safe. They are some of the bravest and most courageous Americans. We must do more to support them and their families, including expanding the GI Bill’s benefits, increasing funding for Veterans Administration health services, and expanding support for veteran caregivers. I will fight to ensure our veterans receive everything we have promised them.
I know from my own work as a physician how expensive healthcare is for our families. I make it a rule in my practice– if a patient doesn’t have insurance, we won’t ask for payment. In Congress, I will fight to strengthen the Affordable Care Act and lower the cost of prescription drugs, so that everyone has the chance at a healthy life. However, Congresswoman Kim supports repealing the Affordable Care Act and has voted against legislation that would take on Big Pharma. The cost of prescription drugs is a major impediment for many families. I support taking incremental steps to help improve affordability for many families–like lowering the age of Medicare to 50 and making it easier to produce generic drugs.
Conservation is a major issue for the people of CA-40. We have the privilege of enjoying beautiful open spaces of nature, wetlands, and natural habitats that must be protected. I will fight to create legislation to ensure the longevity of our natural resources and biodiversity for generations to come. I support the West Coyote Hills Preservation Act that would save the largest-remaining open space in North Orange County and will fight to protect Tres Hermanos Ranch from development.[2] |
