Qatar Airways has been running a special initiative for nearly four years to support students throughout their educational journeys worldwide. As part of the program, students can enjoy a range of benefits, from discounted fares on flights to additional luggage allowances, among other perks. Here is how to maximize the benefits of the program.

The Student Club perks

Qatar Airways operates a special program called The Student Club, which is integrated with the airline's loyalty program, the Qatar Airways Privilege Club. The initiative was launched in November 2020 and "designed specifically with students' needs in mind" and was part of the "wider transformation of Qatar Airways Privilege Club" loyalty program.

Commenting on the program, former Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr Akbar Al Baker, said:

"Travel is an important part of their life, with many choosing to study abroad for the duration of their university career or for a semester. We also know that the long university vacations are a wonderful opportunity for students to visit family or friends or simply to explore the world. Having listened to the needs of our current student passengers, we are delighted to help them to aim for the skies with our Student Club."

According to the Qatari flag carrier, Qatar Airways Student Club's benefits include:

  • Special fares on flights: Students who join the club receive a 10% discount, which increases to 15% after their first journey and 20% after their second and third trips.
  • Extra baggage allowances: Students can carry an additional 10kg or one more piece, depending on the route.
  • The flexibility of changing flight dates: Students have one complimentary date change for themselves and their Student Companions.
  • Student Companion Pass: Students can invite up to three friends or family members to become Student Companions. Student companions are eligible for special fare offers and one complimentary date change.
  • Privilege Club tier upgrade as a graduation gift: Students must fly at least once a year as a Student Club member to receive this gift.
  • Complimentary onboard WiFi

By joining the Student Club, students are automatically enrolled in the Privilege Club. Meanwhile, by being part of the airline’s loyalty program, students earn Avios whenever they travel with Qatar Airways, oneworld alliance airlines, or any of the airline's partners. They can also accumulate Avios by using Qatar Airways credit cards and by making purchases with Privilege Club retail and lifestyle partners.

Avios loyalty miles can be used for a variety of benefits, such as award flights, upgrades, or extra baggage on Qatar Airways, as well as shopping at Qatar Duty Free, flights, and hotel stays with partners.

Transferring your Avios miles

Becoming a Student Club member offers numerous advantages, extending beyond those previously mentioned. One notable benefit is automatic enrollment in the Qatar Airways Privilege Club loyalty program, allowing members to earn and spend Avios loyalty miles.

Launched in 2011, Avios serves as the frequent flier currency for six airlines' frequent flier programs, including Qatar Airways. As mentioned earlier, Avios loyalty miles can be redeemed for various perks, such as complimentary class upgrades, free flights, or lounge access at various airports around the world.

What sets accumulating Avios loyalty miles through the Privilege Club apart is the ability to transfer these miles between programs. Considering transferring Avios between certain programs can have many pros, as their value and utility may vary slightly across different programs.

For instance, Qatar Airways currently allows Avios loyalty miles transfers exclusively to and from the British Airways Executive Club account. The process of transferring Avios points is relatively simple: passengers must hold accounts with at least two of these airline loyalty programs to initiate the transfer. To illustrate, if you're a Qatar Airways passenger, begin by logging into your Qatar Airways Privilege Club account and then link your Qatar Airways and British Airways Executive Club accounts.
