No. 1 Babson Wins Second Straight NEWMAC Title with 18-9 Win Over Springfield

BABSON PARK, Mass.— Graduate student Jared Rainville tallied six goals and two assists for eight points and junior Alex Fascilla made 18 saves in goal as No. 10/13 Babson College rolled past Springfield College, 19-8, to capture its second straight NEWMAC men's lacrosse championship Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field.

With its fourth consecutive victory, Babson improves to 15-3 overall and earns the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament while Springfield winds up its season at 7-10.

Junior Jacob Tauss and first-year Rowan Mondello scored three times and junior Max Mallett and first-year Luke Wang  contributed two goals and two assists for the Beavers. Senior Topher Bower, and sophomore Bennett Smith collected a pair of assists, senior Brendan Maher finished with two caused turnovers and five ground balls, and grad student James Turco won 8-of-15 face-offs and senior Grey Sunderland won 8-of-16 in the win.

Graduate student Mason Nocito led the Pride with four goals and an assist, classmate Kevin Tierney finished with two goals and an assist and sophomore Matt Webb added a goal and a helper. Junior Vincent Scialdone  won 14-of-28 face-offs and scooped up a game-high seven ground balls and classmate Kaden Quirk made 12 saves in goal in the setback.

The Beavers burst out of the dam with four goals in the first eight minutes of the game, one each by senior Ford Carney, Rainville, Rauss and Mondello. Nocito answered with back-to-back goals for the visitors before senior Max Iannone fired one in with six seconds to go in the frame to give the hosts a 5-2 lead after one.

The Pride tallied two of the first three goals of the second quarter to pull to within 6-4 but Babson notched four consecutive goals to close out the half, including a goal and an assist from Mallett, to take a 10-4 lead the break.

Each team scored three times in the first 10 minutes of the third quarter as the visitors hung within striking distance, trailing 13-7 with less than five minutes to go in the quarter, but Babson pulled away with goals by Mallett and Tauss to end the third and Rainville, Wang and senior Christian Brofft  to start the fourth, opening up an 18-7 margin.

Babson finished with a 55-42 advantage in shots and 43-28 margin in ground balls. The Green and White were 1-for-2 in man-up situations and Springfield was 2-for-5 with the man advantage.
