Editorial Reviews

In the history of Motown there is only one person more important in its evolution and everlasting success than Berry Gordy, and that's Smokey Robinson - the only artist at the label to also become a class songwriter, producer and company vice-president. Robinson was beginning to reap the benefits of a reluctant solo career by May 1978, when he wowed an enthusiastic crowd at Los Angeles' Roxy nightclub. A recording of that night became the double-live LP Smokin', an extraordinary document of the man in his vocal prime - which, until now, has never been on CD.

Smokin', back in print in any format for the first time in 30 years, includes definitive live versions of classic Miracles songs "The Tracks Of My Tears," "The Tears Of A Clown" and more - even a surprise medley of the group's earliest ballads, "Bad Girl" and "(You Can) Depend On Me." Among the Smokey solo hits are extended live versions of "Quiet Storm," "Baby That's Backatcha," "Vitamin U" and "Baby Come Close." Also included is the album's original studio bonus track, the R&B-charting single "Shoe Soul."

Smokin', as Volume 5 in the Smokey Robinson Solo Album Series, not only new includes a reproduction of the LPs' original artwork, its booklet features additional photos from the original performance at the Roxy. And, as in previous volumes, there are newly commissioned liner notes by U.K. author Peter Doggett, who calls the album "a supreme demonstration of how a great artist can make a concert venue feel like a small room."

Many people probably don't know Smokey Robinson recorded a live album. Similar to Curtis Mayfield's "Curtis Live", Smokey does his solo stuff along with some of his classics with The Miracles. Because it was originally released in 1978, you're not going to get his classic solo stuff like, "Cruisin", "Being with You", and "Just to See Her"; his live versions of "Quiet Storm" and encore "Baby Come Close" are outstanding. Standouts of his Miracles renditions include: "Tracks of My Tears", "I Second That Emotion", and everyone's favorite, "Ooo Baby Baby". This is a must have for fans who love and appreciate live music.

What a great album! I will never forget the day I initially received this from Motown (I was a program director for a radio station then). I put the record on, turned out all the lights and pretended I was seeing Smokey live! What a treat! Smokey has always had one of the best live shows and this is no exception! A great companion to "Smokey Robinson & The Miracles 1957-72" (their final live appearance together), he does justice to the songs in his extensive catalog from the restored intro and the first chords of "The Tracks of My Tears" through the jazzy "Love So Fine", recent cuts like "Quiet Storm", "Agony and the Ecstacy" and "Vitamin U" (this was recorded in May 1978); vintage classics like "The Tears of A Clown", "Bad Girl"/"You Can Depend On Me" and "Here I Go Again" (which he does acapella) to his closing number, his first big solo hit "Baby Come Close." The only thing that tops this is actually seeing him live or viewing the DVD "Greatest Hits Live", in which he does the beginning of "You've Really Got A Hold On Me" as a rap. Get them both - you won't regret it!

In my opinion, this is one of his best cd's! It sounds as if he is right next to you singing only to you. There are lots of laughs and fun on the cd as well as romantic love, slow songs. When Smokey sings Baby Come Close,he brings the house down! No one can do a love song as well as he can. He is the Love Man!,

For the fifth installment of this great reissue campaign, we get Smokin; the live double record set originally released in 1978 while Smokey was supporting the Love Breeze album.

The sound and packaging on this disc are both superb. The remastering is great and the liner notes have some nice additional quotes from Smokey specifically regarding his approach to live sets throughout his career. Speaking of set lists, there's a nice mixture of "old hits" and new tracks from this time period. I am absolutely thrilled to have/hear the three songs from Love Breeze that I consider to be stellar, (Why You Want To See My Bad Side, Daylight and Darkness and Madam X), in their live incarnations.

Regarding the actual show/performances, usually live versions of songs is where new energy is built upon and the band feeds into the energy of the crowd to take songs to new heights. But on Smokin' it is suprisingly reserved throughout most of the tracks. Mind you this is by no means a complaint. Most of the songs benefit from this laid back vibe. Things like having the clavinet substitued in for the part of original horn arrangements on Tears of a Clown are a joy to hear. That being said, there are a few songs that seemed to stagnate and would have benefitted from a more energized attack, (especially I Second That Emotion and Mickey's Monkey).

While in my dream alternate universe, the original concert edits would have been removed and we would have a bonus disc of the entire show, I am still thrilled to receive this beautiful gift of music restored to its' original glory. Smokey's voice, as always is brilliant and so many of these songs are magnificent to hear with new live adaptations.

Coming up next is Warm Thoughts. Right at the top of my all time favorite Smokey Solo records. This reissue campaign is the gift that keeps on giving.

This live album will put you in the middle of his concert. It's truly magical. I've got all of his live albums and this one is the best. He has the audience eating out of his hand. That's how great this session is. I would give this album a 10 out of 10.

I was asked to review this cd by Smokey Robinson and my first thought was what else is there to say. Smokey is the best singer/song writer that has ever lived.Period. And this cd just illustrates his genius. Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars スモーキーのライブ。悪い訳が何処にある!

はっきり言って俺たちが、スモーキーのライブの何処にケチをつける権利があるのだろう。
もう一曲目の最初の発声からキャーキャー言って間違いあるまい。
Trcks of my tearsは静かに始まる。ケチのつけようがない始まり方。
Quiet storm
