Notes
Live at Chelmsford Top Security Prison is a live album by the Sex Pistols, released in 1990. It was recorded on September 17, 1976 at the Chelmsford Maximum Security Prison, before Glen Matlock left the band.
The recording featured many non-Sex Pistols overdubs and insertions arranged by the band's early soundman Dave Goodman. These included a canned audio track of a riot (complete with shouting, scuffles, breaking glass, etc.). As the liner notes on the Live at Chelmsford Top Security Prison CD say: "Their opening number was "Anarchy"... at the end of the number there was a barrage of catcalls, boos and screaming."
However, the same concert tracks were released (in original play order) on the "Sex Pistols: Alive" CD without overdubs, contrasting with the Goodman-produced Chelmsford CD. The 1992 Dojo release DOJO CD 66 also doesn't have the overdubs, but doesn't follow the original play order.

referencing Live At Chelmsford Prison (CD, Album) DOJO CD 66
This soundboard recording is actually one of the better semi-official Pistols live albums, even when you factor in Dave Goodman's incompetence in completely losing Matlock's bass in the mix, which is a shame as this is one of the few decent recordings of the band in concert before Glenn was fired.
For reasons best known to himself Goodman also jumbled up the running order, and later on produced another version of this album for Restless which had the missing bass overdubbed and a John Lydon impersonator and crowd noises added between the tracks to suggest a riot was taking place at the band's behest... truly bizarre.- Sex Pistols - Live At Chelmsford Prison (1976 Supported by D. Goodman Productions) 让一帮朋克在监狱里进行文艺汇演,1976年,真有他们的哈~
- Edited 3 years agoIf Dave had just added the Bass and left it at that it would have been an essential release, but no Dave had to force his hippy politics on us all with fake banter from a terrible Lydon impersonator, fake crowd noise etc.
he also jumbled the running order for no sane reason
despite the commonly held opinion there is no additional guitar overdubbed on this release although Goodman did get as far as giving a tape of the show to the Guitarist in his "Ex Pistols" band and telling him to learn the songs.
The Cleopatra release "Sex Anarchy and Rock 'n'Roll Swindle" contains a unique and great sounding version of "Did You no Wrong" from this show with just an overdubbed bassline and none of the other garbage. shame we can't get the whole show in that quality.
having said all that, in reality our only choices are the raw version(s) and this, and the bass makes this more enjoyable.
Bizarrely a clip of the fake Lydon impersonator from this release even made it into the Filth & The Fury documentary ("This Songs about Harold Wilson, its called Liar ")
someone didn't do much archive research as a recording of the real Lydon saying the same words is easily available
thankfully a soundboard recording of the Paris show has now surfaced meaning we're no longer stuck with Chelmsford as our only 1976 soundboard recording - This is the Goodman release with fake Johnny Rotten banter in between songs. DON'T BY THIS ONE, watch for the Dojo or the Goodtimes release, if you want the real show. The Goodtimes is also in the right order of the songs.
