Stefan Jarl is best known for his Mods trilogy of documentaries, capturing Stockholm's outsider underbelly of crime and substance abuse. Out of those, A Respectable Life (1979) stands, at least to me, as one of the greatest achievements in Swedish documentary filmmaking.
From the 90's onward, Jarl began to occasionally dabble in the realm of narrative film, most notably Nature’s Warrior (1997) which was nominated for that year's Guldbagge award (Sweden's equivalent of the Oscars) for best cinematography. It's no wonder that with his decade-spanning career as a documentarian, he had developed a deep sense of naturalism to utilize for the medium.
Which brings us to his most recent attempt at narrative filmmaking in the form of Before Winter Comes.…
