Despite its suggestive title, Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever — which premiered Saturday on Lifetime — is not a film about the birth of Jesus as seen through the eyes of a grouchy feline.

It’s really a film about dognapping, divorce, bullying and the general failure of the American mall security system. Most importantly, though, it makes absolutely no sense — which is kind of the point. I think.
Anyway, here’s the “plot” in a nutshell: We meet Grumpy Cat (voiced by Parks and Recreation‘s Aubrey Plaza) in the mall pet shop she calls home, though bad business is threatening to shut it down for good. The owner plans to save his shop by bringing in a rare breed of dog named JoJo — one guaranteed to drum up attention, business, etc. — though he doesn’t account for the wily pair of wannabe rockstars plotting to steal the prized pooch.
Then comes the real plot twist: it turns out the security guard attempting to thwart the burglars is actually behind the whole operation! And in the midst of all this madness, a sad, young girl named Chrystal (Megan Charpentier) forms a mysterious bond with Grumpy Cat; thanks to a magical wish, she can actually understand what the cat is thinking.
Regardless of any negative feelings you may have towards the movie, there’s no more aggressive critic than the star herself, who regularly interjects her displeasure with its many flaws. That brand of self-awareness is alive and well throughout the entire movie, including this prophetic quip: “Please, like the Lifetime execs would blow their chance at a sequel.”
(Come on, you know she’s right.)

This movie will give Die Hard a run for it’s money as the best Christmas movie of all time.
Wow, that’s quite the compliment. I DVR’d to watch later. Hope it’s as good as you say :-)
No it’s not, he meant the 4th and 5th Die Hard movies. ;)
Haha… good one David!
*its
I enjoy it thought it was cute and funny
I think the real story is the inappropriate commercials Lifetime was running during the family film…
^ THIS!!! I kept praying my kids wouldn’t ask me what sex or menopause were! Lol
Cause you can’t have a responsible educated conversation with your children if/when they ask you about those subjects? C’mon…
It’s LIFETIME! The demographic is old menopausal cat ladies who have menstrual problems and can’t get it on. What did you think they were going to advertise? Also why I never watch anything live so I can skip the commercials.
Ok grumpy dog man, we get it.
I thought it was hilariously adorable. Didn’t expect the Usual Suspects or the A-Team references. I actually laughed out loud at parts!
It’s getting a “A” in the poll. I weep for humanity.
Agreed. SMH
The “F” rating is very close, though.
Well wouldn’t getting an F rating be the entire point? That’s what Grumpy Cat wants. So either way, she wins.
I watched it with my kids & niece. It was funny & cute!We enjoyed it..She’s so snarky-especially funny when she followed her statement with “meow”.
This was a horrible kids movie. I had three young girls watching it. Why can’t they make a kid’s movie without any language (over a half dozen “hells” and “Gods”), innuendo, and commercial breaks having to do with vaginal pain during intercourse. I was VERY disappointed with Lifetime and won’t be watching this anytime soon again.
lol… “Hells & Gods” really?? That upset you? Stick to PBS maybe?
PBS is arguably worse. But a totally G rating wouldn’t be interesting or consistent with Grumpy cat. Most of what we know is over the head of kids, and if you thought this would be a kid’s movie, that’s unrealistic.
As to the commercials, are you unfamiliar with Lifetime? Nobody puts g-rated with those commercials. But for Lifetime this is expected value.
Lifetime did a movie about anorexia. One of the commercials was for a weight loss product. Seriously.
HAHAHAHA!!!! That’s so bad it’s funny!
not all commercials go through lifetime or any network some are inserted by the cable or sat company. but i saw 5 min about half way through that was enough the cat was doing a silique about a lifetime sequel
Not PBS… Disney
Hells and gods, seriously? What are you, five? Those three young girls probably hear more than hells and gods in school, and wherever else they go. They probably even use it too! Maybe not around you, but around their friends. Get with the times, we’re sadly losing our children. Also, it’s not like any networks could magically change and have specific commercials during certain movies. They have a list of commercials, and they show them, they can’t pick and choose when to show them. Here’s an idea, change the channel during the commercials. Or better yet, just stick with Disney, Disney Junior and PBS :)
Not PBS at night though. Those Masterpiece (all varieties) series certainly are not as kid friendly as Grumpy Cat was.
I’m sorry you were offended. But Lifetime is not for children, and has never been. Even if the movie may have seemed appropriate for children, the regular advertisements are geared toward a certain segment of the population. It would have been better to have recorded it and watched it later. As for the language, okay to be offended, but I personally didn’t hear anything at all. Maybe you should avoid Lifetime from now on.
If it’s true that this Lifetime offering isn’t for very young kids, then it’s even worse than I originally thought! Plus I don’t like the voicing for the always photogenic Grumpy Cat. The heroine did her best
Thanks for the info :) Despite the people above me, you’re not the only one who cares about that sort of thing.
Holy hell that was god damn bad!
People like you are why we can’t have all the episodes of Judging Amy airing on Up right now.
Sure, it’s annoying they’re editing or not airing episodes, but 20th Century Fox is the reason why there are no DVD releases or even digital downloads available for Judging Amy.
Some Sunday masses go further… Shudder.
This movie wasn’t good at all. What an unfortunate waste of time and money.
Exactly. I watched part of it thinking it would be funny but then turned it off and went on facebook.
If there is a sequel, can it be Grumpy Cat and JoJo? That dog was an unexpected gem.
For me, this could be the worst movie in the history of cinima and it would still be 100 x better than Lifetime dishing out the one millionth biographical cleberity/behind-the-scenes-of-a-tv-show/real-life person who turned famous story movies they’ve been pushing lately. I,for one, will gladly watch this 10 times over another one of those no matter what the haters say or how shaky the movie is. Just my thoughts.
Agreed. The Saved By the Bell one was so boring. This at least made me laugh.
So if you don’t like this movie you’re a hater? That word has completely lost its meaning thanks to people using it for everything.

I agree
LOL!!
OMG I was eating my lunch and almost spit my food out! thanks for the laugh!
grumpy cat’s wrost Chrstmas was one of the worst Saturday Lifetime movies ever. What a waste… The story line could have been 200 percent better for sure, maybe if a 3rd grader wrote it
It was goofy, silly and corny! I loved it! The kids loved it too! Even caught the hubby laughing a few times. We all watched it as a family and will happily watch it again.
Awesome movie!!!! My kids love it!!! Cat looks like she has short hair persian and Siamese in her.
Look up Ralphie’s Scratching Post on Facebook. He’d make a great side kick to Grumpy cat.
Grumpy cat was hilarious and funny but a bit corny, but isn’t that why is was soon much fun!
The best part was it advertised “GrumpyGrams.com” where me and my daughter could take our picture together and put it in a “Grumpy” Frame! I think this was equal fun and bonding time with my child. The cat could have used other words than “Loser” and “Witch” and the opportune time, but other than that it was fine. We both laughed and did a GrumpyGram together! LoL!!!! therefore we “Loved It!”
OH MAN, I cant believe I sat through that – worst movie I’ve subjected myself to seeing in a long time. I cant believe someone actually paid $$ to make it. I don’t blame GRUMPY as he didn’t have much say so. If he had – it would have been better. Whether for kids or adults, it was pretty bad. It even made my cats leave the room, it was so BAD!
I thought it was lots of fun. I liked the cat’s commentary on the movie itself and found it to be kind of an homage to Home Alone.
That is an insult to Home Alone, the best Christmas movie of all time!!!
Best Xmas movie ever!!!
It was utterly ridiculous but it didn’t take itself seriously, it knew EXACTLY what it was, and it essentially MST3K’d itself. Is it the best Holiday movie ever? Um…….have you seen Scrooged, Christmas Vacation, or the Eureka episode Do You See What I See? So no it’s not. It’s also not the worst Holiday movie ever. What that would be I couldn’t tell you off the top of my head, but I have seen worse movies than this. So……..I can dig it.
That attempt at a Christmas Vacation sequel, THAT was a bad Holiday movie. Along with the Old Navy (I think) Vacation themed commercials.
It was campy fun. Went into it expecting the worst and enjoyed it.
I very much enjoyed the movie, thought it was awesome!!
Well, this is one individual’s opinion, but here it goes; I couldn’t make it to the end. I just thought that it was horrible and seemed as though people who never acted and people who never made a movie before got together and made this. It was seriously low quality entertainment. I am sure that some of the “talent” are able to deliver better performances than this production allowed, but as for the production itself, I thought that is came off as being in a very early development stage and not anywhere ready for TV time. It seemed almost like a prank on the public … as in “how bad can we make our programming and still get people to accept it?”. There are quite a few new Christmas movies on TV this year, including some that actually acknowledge the true meaning of Christmas as opposed to the usual “Santa’s dysfunctional family’s issues” recycled nonsense. Hallmark has some more impressive new Christmas TV movies to offer this year. Even the ones that are only loosely based on Christmas, just being everyday stories that take place at Christmas time still greatly raise the bar above this horrible cat production. If this was a third grade project, I’d be very impressed, but as a professional TV production, I thought it was almost worth cancelling cable over!
By the way, the entire family echoed my thoughts after they actually watched the rest when I couldn’t take any more of it!
I disagree about the Hallmark channel. Most of those movies are bad and lame too. I also don’t think most of the acting is good either. I find myself mocking those because they’re all the same.
I’m not saying that Hallmark is making movies as great as Braveheart. I’m just saying that as light Christmas entertainment, their productions are much more impressive than this cat thing! I can watch the Hallmark programming with the family all the way through and some actually raise your Christmas Spirit instead of making you wonder how you can get that 2 hours of your life back!
Speaking of Hallmark, there was a movie on at the same time on that channel starring Candice Cameron Bure. A lot of people I know said they were going to watch it last night. Thanks, but no thanks! I’d rather see a sassy, little cat that a sappy holiday romance movie. I enjoyed Grumpy Cat’s movie very much, btw! :-)
The movie would have been so much better if the right person spoke for Grumpy Cat! Whomever, was not good, was not real with the Grumpy Cat’s image, not even close! The voice killed the whole movie, for me! I love The Grumpy Cat though, just not the one who spoke for her!
Agreed. Horrible actress. And OMG, did she ACTUALLY pimp herself IN the movie as top billing? I’m guessing the reason they didn’t have the budget to do the driving through the breaking glass scene was because it probably went to reel her in? If so… they shoulda spent the money on the glass breaking scene. She’s wretched!
I thought it was fun.
And anyone saying it was really bad must have never seen other Lifetime movies. Or better yet, you want to see really awful, watch Santa Claus Conquers the Martians from the 1960s. Then you will see this wasn’t so bad.
I just can’t accept the low bar because it’s been lowered before. We encourage more of these things to be made when the viewer numbers are high. I will not watch the cat show again … or any sequels. I avoid Lifetime because it is all drippy, victimized, soap opera love level stuff. It’s hard enough finding good programming on good channels! Lifetime is a non starter.
As soon as I knew it was going to be on Lifetime I figured it was going to be bad. But this… this was just all out wretched, bleach out my eyes and dump acid in my ears bad.
