Chicago Soccer Weekend Preview: Fire at RBNY, Red Stars vs. Angel City FC - On Tap Sports Net Skip to main content

It’s a Chicago soccer doubleheader on Saturday night as the Fire travel to take on the New York Red Bulls before the Red Stars host Angel City in Bridgeview on national television.

Chicago Fire at New York Red Bulls

The Fire look to make it two wins in a row in New Jersey after defeating their Eastern Conference rivals 1-0 last September thanks to a match-winner from Georgios Koutsias. Chicago is coming off a massive 2-1 win over Houston last weekend and will need to carry that momentum over against a tough RBNY side.

Lewis Morgan’s six goals and Dante Vanzeir’s six assists have helped propel RBNY to the top of the table with an MLS-high 14 points despite scoring as many goals (11) as their opponents from Chicago, who currently sit outside the playoff places due to goal differential.

The Fire will once again be without starting left back Andrew Gutman and his backup Chase Gasper, likely forcing Frank Klopas to put Allan Arigoni at that spot for the second consecutive week.

The Red Stars look to continue their strong play against Angel City in a late-night fixture on Saturday.

Chicago took four points from its two matches against the California-based side in 2023, buoyed by three goals in those two contests from Ava Cook. The Red Stars didn’t have Mallory Swanson for their 2023 matchups and will look much different than they did when these two sides previously faced off.

It remains to be seen which of the five members of the Red Stars previously on international duty will be available on Saturday night, but Chicago should have most of its roster available in Bridgeview.

On another note, do we think this match will start before 8:45 PM CT? This writer is skeptical.
