RCB annihilate RR by 112 runs!

End of obliteration: 59-10 (10.3 overs)

The chaos continued, with Shimron Hetmyer bludgeoning some sixes at one end (scoring 35 by himself, while the other ten managed 24 between them). Ashwin departed for a platinum duck, despite the no-crossover rule, which encapsulates the Royals' predicament on this fateful day. And once Hetmyer was gone, the Royals stared down the barrel at their inevitable fate - 59 all-out, their second lowest total (first, 58, also against RCB), and a much bleaker chance at making the playoffs than about an hour earlier.

Powerplay: RR 28-5 (6 overs)

Sometimes numbers don't tell the whole story. This isn't one of those times. It started with the two in-form openers, Jaiswal and Buttler, falling for ducks to Siraj and Parnell respectively. Samson fell to Parnell to give the latter his second wicket of the over, and RR were in the middle of a meek surrender. After a brief lull, which included an LBW decision of Root (playing his first IPL innings) which was reversed to "not out", Bracewell got rid of Padikkal off his second ball. It looked like RCB could do no wrong on their way to a second win against RR this season. A top-notch yorker from Parnell got rid of Root to get his third wicket in the powerplay. And suddenly, RR had lost half their side in the powerplay! Could there be a way back for the Royals?

INNINGS BREAK

Death overs: RCB 171-5 (20 overs)

51 in the last five at just over ten an over, where Maxwell went ballistic but didn't last particularly long after his fifty falling to a tame reverse-sweep. A couple of wickets by Zampa and Sharma scalping Maxwell put the breaks on the RCB's innings, but a handy cameo by Anuj Rawat ensured that RCB set RR a competitive target of 172. However, will this be enough at their den, with Jos Buttler back in touch, and Yashasvi Jaiswal in ballistic form?

Middle overs: RCB 120-2 (15 overs)

A fifty for Faf, at a strike-rate of 120, that ended right at the end of this phase, was a typical sheet anchor innings, with Maxwell attacking at the other end. However, this phase got RCB a middling 78 runs in 9 overs, and an overall run-rate of 8rpo. At this juncture, they needed a phase of play that touched at least 10 runs an over, to justify the wickets that they had kept in hand for such a situation...

Powerplay: RCB 42-0 (6 overs)

RCB got off to a relatively sedate start, with RR bringing in unexpected changes, like Zampa and Ashwin in the powerplay. This kept the star batting pair in check, as the hosts conceded only 42 runs at 7rpo in the powerplay. The dryness of the wicket and Ashwin's guile in particular has been impressive, piling the pressure on RCB, despite the lack of an entry in the wickets column.

Toss: RCB win the toss and opt to bat first!

The Royal battle with loads at stake

The Rajasthan Royals are at the cusp of the top four, and perhaps guiltyof peaking too early. So early, that they had time to have a slump and peak again. RCB, as has been the case over the years, are faltering at the wrong time despite the right personnel, but the inability to click as a unit. Who will prevail in this crucial encounter? The ones on the brink of earning themselves the tag of the underachievers for another year, or the side that has fortuitously (and through hard work) found its second coming?
