Honestly, this could be a 5 star if this was about half as long. Many of the songs on the second half just feel unnecessary. But man, it’s amazing when you’re in the right mood.

Kid Koala has been turning heads with his beat production and unique sampling style for quite a few years now. This album is an instrumental piece along with some vocals from Emilíana Torrini. He is most known for his instrumental hip-hop beats, but as the title implies, these aren't the same upbeat, banger beats that he has created in the past. Instead he provides us with a seventeen song list of spacey and ambient beats with some vocals.
For some things I liked. I think the production is done really well. He gracefully switches things up from minimal to more complex as seen in the song Photons. There are defined layers he creates with electronics pieces, drum machines, and a bass simulation. And for the most part they sound really well when played as a song, the cohesion within each song is really masterful. I also appreciate how he varies the song length so it doesn't feel very monotonous. Especially with more instrumental, ambient projects, the time can seem to drag if every song is too similar.
Now for the cons, the productions (while really well done) is uncannily similar in most of the songs. I understand that the vibe he was going for called for these types of beats, but the beats are just too similar to differentiate between the songs. Another problem is that Emiliana Torrini doesn't add anything to the actual album. The songs she is featured in, she performs with this lazy and attempted emotional voice, that seems to linger for such a long time. She adds a very dry recording onto an otherwise sort of interesting instrumental. Going along with that, Kid Koala needs to cut this album down. It's over an hour of very like-sounding ambient clips. The ambient genre has the problem where a lot of the music feels longer than it is, and having in absurdly long album isn't helping with that problem.
Overall, this isn't awful. It's listenable, but it's definitley long and boring. I appreciate certain aspects of this album. Needs some more work to make it really good, but I think that a lot of those changes wouldn't be too hard to do. If you enjoy slower, chill ambient music, then check out this project. It might be the one for you.
Best Songs: The Observable Universe, Novachord, The Hubble Constant
Worst Songs: Adrift, Collapser
Rating: 5.5/10

A very good surprise. Kid Koala eschews the samples / turntablism of his previous records and teams up with Icelandic Emialana to give birth to a stunning slow, quiet record. It really lends itself to music you can work / read / draw to. It's gentle and melodic and Emiliana Torrini's voice is like a Bjork taking Valium. Recommended.
