The Best Places to Buy Baby Clothes for Quality, Comfort, and Cuteness

From everyday play clothes to photo-worthy holiday outfits, we’ve rounded up all the best retailers.

Best Places to Buy Baby Clothes

Parents / David Hattan

Between spit-up and drool, the inevitable diaper blowout, and simply growing like weeds, babies frequently need more than one outfit change per day. At a minimum, newborns will need about six each of bodysuits, onesies, sleepers, T-shirts, and socks, as well as a few pairs of pants, nightgowns, and sleep sacks. The best baby clothing is comfortable enough to wear until the next change and durable enough to last until they outgrow it.

“You want to make sure the baby's clothing is not too tight, but also not too loose, " says Navya Mysore, M.D., a primary care provider at One Medical. "Avoid clothing with rough edges, tags, beads, or sequins. These may irritate your baby's skin and could be a choking hazard.”

Whether your little one needs a special occasion dress, a coming-home outfit, or casual everyday wear, we’ve got you covered. To find the best places to buy baby clothes, we reviewed guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) on tips for dressing a baby and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on sleep safety. We also consulted two experts: a physician and a professional tailor.

Perhaps the most important experts we consulted were the dozens of parents and caregivers, who told us where they buy their baby's clothes. We then researched dozens of top-rated retailers, assessing each brand on quality, customer service, materials, design, durability, ease of cleaning, sizing, return policies, shipping options, store perks, sustainability, and value.

Our Favorites

Best Overall: Hanna Andersson

Hanna Andersson Baby Striped 2-Way Zip Sleeper in HannaSoft

Hanna Andersson

Why We Like It

Hanna Andersson’s adorable prints, intuitive designs, impeccable quality, and soft fabric make shopping for baby clothes super fun. From cardigans to swimsuits and the brand's notoriously soft PJs, you'll find all the clothing your baby will need. There’s a wide variety of print options, and many styles have snaps or two-way zippers instead of buttons for easier on and off. Plus, the company offers matching family pajamas in seasonal prints.

One of our favorite things about Hanna Andersson is the durability and craftsmanship, which means the pieces really last, so they make great hand-me-downs. The brand actually offers a “Pre-Loved Hanna-Me-Downs” section, so you can sell or buy pre-loved Hanna Andersson clothes. This is not only an awesome sustainable option but also speaks to the longevity of these well-made clothes.

We love Hanna Andersson because the company makes its clothes from OEKO-TEX-certified 100% organic cotton, which means it's undergone third-party testing to ensure it’s free from potentially harmful chemicals. The brand just launched a new clothing line with cooling Tencel lyocell fabric. Hanna Andersson also uses recycled materials for items like outerwear.

But Take Note

The retailer does not sell shoes, and its outwear is limited to mostly sweatshirts and blazers.

Best for Preemies: Carter’s Baby

Carter's Baby Baby Preemie Rainbow Cotton Tank

Carter's Baby

Why We Like It

Welcoming a preemie into the world can be stressful, but thankfully, Carter’s can at least take the stress out of dressing your little one. The brand offers two categories of preemie clothes: NICU preemie up to 5 pounds and preemie up to 6 pounds. Its preemie clothing was designed with NICU nurses to ensure it fits the needs of NICU babies. The clothes have details like plastic snaps, so they’re X-ray safe, and front-wrap clothing that’s easier to take on and off. Even with these accommodations, the pieces are as cute as ever, with lots of sweet patterns and vibrant color options available.

Beyond preemie clothes, Carter's Baby ranks high on our list because the well-loved retailer has a wide variety of consistently affordable, high-quality baby clothes, including basic onesies, cozy pajamas, holiday styles, and more. The store can be your one-stop shop for everyday basics and formal needs. Carter’s shines with holiday themes, including Halloween, Christmas, and Mother’s Day looks, and a licensed sports shop to outfit the littlest fans.

But Take Note

Sizing can run small, especially the older kids' clothing.

Most Affordable: Amazon Essentials

Amazon Essentials Unisex Babies' Cotton Long-Sleeve Side Snap Bodysuit

Amazon

Why We Like It

The Amazon Essentials line features a wide range of affordable baby clothes. These inexpensive pieces include complete layette sets, onesies, bodysuits, pants, tees, shorts, pants, and socks. Most of the everyday clothes come in multipack sets and regularly go on sale, further boosting the value. For instance, a six-pack of Amazon Essentials baby bodysuits costs $28.50, or $4.75 per suit. And as I write this, a three-pack of bodysuits that’s normally $22 is temporarily on sale for $6.50 (that’s $2.17 per suit!).

We love that Amazon’s filters make it easy to search by size, pattern, sleeve length, and more. In addition to the basics, you’ll find items like bunting suits and other outerwear, cardigans, and sleep sacks. The cute pieces and sets come in various color and print options. It helps to be an Amazon Prime member since you can get these baby clothes delivered for free with one- or two-day shipping—a godsend if you quickly need to add your baby’s wardrobe.

But Take Note

The fabric content will vary between items. We wish all the clothing from Amazon Essentials were made of the same fabric blend, but that’s not the case.

  • Return policy: Free returns on most items
  • Free shipping: With Prime membership or on orders $35 or more
  • Perks: None

Our Review Process

To find the best places to buy baby clothes, we researched more than 40 stores, looking for retailers that offer variety, value, quality, durability, and comfort. We asked dozens of Parents staffers where they shop for their baby’s clothing and why. We wanted to know how long they have shopped at the stores, what they like most about the company, and if they would change anything about the brand.

When reviewing each brand and its products, we considered design, sizing, range of offerings, materials, print and color options, shipping rates, return policies, company perks, environmental sustainability, and pricing.

Our Experts

To gain insights into what parents should look for when purchasing baby clothes, we consulted two experts who provided recommendations from a safety, fit, construction, and style perspective:

  • Navya Mysore, M.D., a One Medical primary care provider
  • Shae Haning, host of the Sew Show with Shae on YouTube, a professional tailor and expectant parent

Factors to Consider When Shopping for Baby Clothes

  • Cost: For everyday clothing, look for budget-friendly options. Babies grow so fast that they may only fit into some outfits for a few weeks. For pieces they would need for an extended period, like a snowsuit, or a special occasion, like a little tuxedo, then upping the budget in the name of quality is a good idea.
  • Quality: Even if you only use them for a brief time, you need your baby’s clothes to stand up to regular use. We’re confident that every retailer on our list has high-quality clothing.
  • Convenience: New parents have enough to worry about without adding inconvenient or pricey returns. Always refer to size charts since they will be more accurate than general aged-based sizing, and pick sites with free shipping and returns.
  • Style: While a few fancy fits will be awesome for adorable photos, be sure you have enough everyday clothing, too. Younger babies often go through several outfits a day. Your priority should be comfort and durability for most daily outfits and play clothes.

Safety Considerations With Closures

Most baby onesies and bodysuits have a choice of closures: snaps, zippers, and buttons. “Figure out which closures you find the most convenient and seek those out,” Haning says. “Some people prefer zippers over snaps and buttons simply because they’re easier to maneuver.” What you choose is entirely down to your preference, but there are some safety considerations. With snaps, Haning advises avoiding metal because nickel can irritate the skin, and because “metal is susceptible to the elements and will heat and cool with the environment around it, so this can be dangerous if it gets too hot and uncomfortable if it gets too cold against baby's skin.”

Be careful with zippers, too. Dr. Mysore says, “Zippers and snaps are fine on baby clothing, but make sure that you are careful with zippers, so they don’t catch on the baby’s skin. I would look for zippers that have the protective fabric flap over them to help avoid pinching any skin.” If you’re unsure which closures you’ll prefer, try various options and see what works best for you.

What’s the Best Fabric for Baby Clothes?

When shopping for baby clothes, Dr. Mysore recommends natural fibers like cotton and linen. “These fabric types are hypoallergenic, breathable, and absorbent, which makes them gentle on a baby's skin. Natural fabrics are also super durable, so they can withstand repeated washings, which are bound to happen with a baby!”

“When searching for baby clothes, I’m often looking for qualities that I would look for in my own adult clothing,” shares Haning. “At the top of my list is finding the highest natural material content percentage possible.”

How Should I Care for Baby Clothes?

Once you bring home the clothes, Haning tells Parents, “All clothing should be washed before wearing as there are many chemicals involved in the fabric creation process, as well as the garment production and shipping processes.” Opt for laundry detergents free of fragrance and dye, and wash clothing after each wear. For more information, check out our comprehensive guides to washing baby clothes and folding them.

Who We Are

Maya Polton is a former marketing manager and freelance writer who covers food, home, and parenting. She’s also the mom of a 14-year-old son, 11-year-old son, and 7-year-old daughter. When her kiddos were babies, Maya would outfit her kids in clothes from various shops. She’s thankful to be on the receiving end of a stylish cousin’s hand-me-down chain and then supplements from other stores. After two boys, adding some pink to her kid’s clothing collection was quite a shock.
