Ghoomer Movie Review: Saiyami Kher, Abhishek Bachchan Starrer Is An Inspiring Journey Of Resilience And Triumph
About Ghoomer
Sports and tragedies have always been an integral part of a sportsman’s life, but what happens if the tragedy is too great for the person to recover from? R Balki’s latest directorial Ghoomer explores just that along with a little bit of patriotism. The film features some really awe-inspiring moments that go really well with the background score designed by Amit Trivedi.
Ghoomer Movie Review: Storyline And Critique
The first half of the film starts off slow with way too much detailing and the establishment of a rising female cricketer Anina (Saiyami Kher), who is leaving no stone unturned to achieve her dream of becoming a cricketer for the Indian cricket team. Mentored by her Dadi (Shaban Azmi) and supported by her childhood friend Jeet (Angad Bedi), Anina manages to somehow make it to the team. However, the season of happiness didn’t last long for Anina and her loved ones as she soon loses her arm in an accident.
Transitioning into the second half, the film suddenly picks up the pace. While Abhishek Bachchan had his fair share of moments in the first half, his character of Padam Singh Sodhi (Paddy) was yet to be explored in depth. And R Balki ensured that this does not come to the audience as an underdeveloped character. With determination dripping in the form of sweat, Anina and Paddy face off against impossible odds to breathe life into a dying dream of a talented young girl.
Ghoomer Movie Review: Performances
Saiyami Kher truly wins the hearts with her portrayal of an innocent girl who is out to make a name for herself but becomes a target for a disaster. Abhishek Bachchan and Shabana Azmi have done a commendable job as Anina’s mentors. Shabana and Abhishek’s characters are the exact counterparts with Shabana mentoring the girl in the first half and Abhishek in the second. Angad Bedi in the supporting role of a lovestruck boy really managed to bring a smile to our faces despite his limited screen presentation. Balki truly explored the depths of every important character and even brought Amitabh Bachchan in a guest appearance as a commentator and a ‘true Indian.’
Ghoomer Movie Review: Direction
R Balki never ceases to amaze his audience when it comes to making something unique and thought-provoking. However, unlike his previous films Paa and Cheeni Kum, Ghoomer revolved around more than just one topic. The film deeply explores basic human emotions of happiness, regret, sorrow, guilt, sacrifice and redemption. It was difficult to control one’s tears as the film moved forward and became a showreel of dedication and hard work.
Ghoomer Movie Review: The Final Verdict
The film may have come across as a half-baked story in the first few minutes. But all questions are eventually answered by every individual character themselves.
