      Critics Consensus

Bathed in opulent black and white with a reptilian Andrew Scott holding the screen hostage, Steven Zaillian's sumptuous reinterpretation of Ripley draws fresh blood from Patricia Highsmith's insidious social climber.

Peter Travers ABC News Andrew Scott excels as a ccn man who makes life hell for Dakota Fanning and Johnny Flynn in Steve Zaillian’s partly exhilarating, partly exasperating slow burn of a series (it’s eight hours) that builds tremendous suspense as evil rots in the Italian sun. Apr 26, 2024 Full Review Debi Enker The Age (Australia) It’s a thoroughly entertaining game. If not a little unsettling. Apr 18, 2024 Full Review Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) There are many reasons to watch this exquisite neo-noir thriller, but it’s worth highlighting just how remarkable Andrew Scott’s performance is as Tom Ripley. Apr 18, 2024 Full Review David Walsh World Socialist Web Site Whatever the shortcomings of either the original novel or this new adaptation, the latter demonstrates an exemplary degree of artistic seriousness and intelligence. It is a slap in the face of contemporary cultural backwardness and degradation.. May 30, 2024 Full Review Neely Swanson Beverly Hills Courier Adapter/director Steven Zallian has done the supremely difficult --he has made a villain the rooting interest of the story, helped enormously by Andrew Scott as the incredibly dark, slithering manipulator. May 24, 2024 Full Review Derek Sante KSNV (Las Vegas) A great series with many high points, giving us new insights and emotions from a story kown. Rated: A May 23, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Emil K An incredible achievement. Brilliantly written/adapted, cast, acted, and directed. It's so beautifully shot, you could just watch it on mute. The dialogue teems with the kind of restrained, believable, simmering tension that I thought you could no longer get made. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/07/24 Full Review Tom P Beautifully photographed, very authentic to the period, the story is just OK and mostly not believable. At some point you have to have somebody to root for, which is totally absent here. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/04/24 Full Review Karen M Outstanding cast, beautifully shot and impossible not to binge watch. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/25/24 Full Review Francesca B BELLISSIMO. Regia perfetta, interpretazione perfetta, fotografia perfetta. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/24/24 Full Review Maajed W Had to watch this as I'd very recently seen the 1999 movie for the first time and loved it (the movie). The movie is still my favourite but this is a good adaptation of the book. The foreboding and darkness is very much there though I would've preferred the series in colour. It would have enhanced the cinematography showcasing the beauty of Italy. I noticed, at times, some lead actors had a kind of forced, unconvincing expression, however Andrew Scott's performance was flawless and he plays the cold, deviant sociopath very well. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/02/24 Full Review Chris I I prefer the original adaptation with Matt Damian, but this version was pretty good. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/19/24 Full Review Read all reviews
