Joan Jett & The Blackhearts – I Love Rock 'N Roll Lyrics | Genius Lyrics

I Love Rock ’N Roll Lyrics

[Verse 1: Joan Jett]
I saw him dancin' there by the record machine
I knew he musta been about 17
The beat was goin' strong
Playin' my favorite song
And I could tell it wouldn't be long
'Til he was with me, yeah, me

And I could tell it wouldn't be long
'Til he was with me, yeah, me, singin'

[Chorus: Joan Jett & Ricky Byrd & Gary Ryan]
I love rock 'n' roll
So put another dime in the jukebox, baby

I love rock 'n' roll
So come and take your time and dance with me

[Verse 2: Joan Jett]
He smiled, so I got up and asked for his name
"That don't matter," he said, "'cause it's all the same"
Said, "Can I take you home where we can be alone?"
And next we were movin' on
He was with me, yeah, me
Next we were movin' on
He was with me, yeah, me, singin'

[Chorus: Joan Jett & Ricky Byrd & Gary Ryan]
I love rock 'n' roll
So put another dime in the jukebox, baby

I love rock 'n' roll
So come and take your time and dance with me
[Verse 3: Joan Jett]
Said, "Can I take you home where we can be alone?"
Next we were movin' on
He was with me, yeah, me
And we'll be movin' on and singin' that same old song
Yeah, with me, singin'

[Outro: Joan Jett & Ricky Byrd & Gary Ryan]
I love rock 'n' roll
So put another dime in the jukebox, baby

I love rock 'n' roll
So come and take your time and dance with me
I love rock 'n' roll
So put another dime in the jukebox, baby

I love rock 'n' roll
So come and take your time and dance with
I love rock 'n' roll
So put another dime in the jukebox, baby

I love rock 'n' roll
So come and take your time and dance with
I love rock 'n' roll
So put another dime in the jukebox, baby

I love rock 'n' roll
So come and take your time and dance with
I love rock 'n' roll
So put another dime in the jukebox, baby

I love rock 'n' roll
So come and take your time and dance with me

Genius Annotation

One of the most successful cover songs of all time, “I Love Rock N' Roll” is Joan Jett & the Blackhearts' gender-swapped rendition of the 1975 version of the same name by Arrows. During a 1976 tour with her previous band The Runaways, Joan Jett saw Arrows perform the song live on television and recorded it for the first time later in 1979 with members of Sex Pistols. The version we know today was re-recorded to be released as a single.

The song was released as the lead single for the album I Love Rock N' Roll on January 19, 1982. It became a huge commercial success, an incredible 7 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, #3 on the year-end chart for 1982, and #72 on the all-time Hot 100 chart. “I Love Rock N' Roll” was certified platinum by the RIAA on September 20, 1982.

Several music videos for the track were made. Although originally filmed in color, the first video for “I Love Rock N' Roll” was played on MTV in black-and-white because Joan Jett liked that look better. Another video for the song was made in 1993 for the soundtrack of Wayne’s World 2.

Although a cover itself, “I Love Rock N' Roll” has been covered various times by different artists, most notably including Britney Spears and The Rock of Ages Movie Band.
