UTA Adds Michigan State Transfer Jack Hoiberg

ARLINGTON – The UT Arlington men's basketball program has added another key addition as Michigan State transfer Jack Hoiberg signed to join the Mavericks.

Hoiberg – who spent the last four years with the Spartans – earned a scholarship this past season as a senior. He played in 14 games each of the past three seasons following a redshirt campaign as a freshman in 2017-18, and has been praised by Hall of Fame Coach Tom Izzo as one of the smartest, toughest players he has ever had at Michigan State.

"I am so pleased with the signing of Jack Hoiberg," stated new UTA head men's basketball coach Greg Young. "Jack has been part of one of the most successful and storied Division-I basketball programs in Michigan State, and played for Hall of Fame Coach Tom Izzo. Jack is a tough, hard-nosed point guard who knows how to run a team and defend at a high level. He is a graduate transfer, so his experience and leadership qualities will make an immediate impact on our program."

A multiple-time Academic All-Big Ten Conference honoree, Hoiberg played in 42 career games with the Spartans and made one start. A product of Burr Ridge, Ill., the 5-11 Hoiberg scored 36 points over those contests and issued 20 assists.

"Jack Hoiberg is one of the smartest, toughest and hardest-working players I've had at Michigan State. That's saying a lot for a kid given some of the players we've had here," said Izzo. "But Jack has always stood out. His ability to see the game and dissect it is exceptional, but make no mistake about it, he can play too and people will get the chance to see that when he takes the floor at UT Arlington.

"We put Jack on scholarship last year and that wasn't something we just handed out," Izzo added. "He earned that because of his hard work and dedication. And he earned the chance to play in some key games for us this past year because the coaching staff trusted him and his teammates did too. Everyone is thrilled for Jack getting the chance to play a bit more, and we can't wait to see him succeed."

A graduate of Hinsdale Central High School, Hoiberg averaged 14.8 points, 2.5 rebounds and two assists per game as a senior in 2016-17, being named to the West Suburban Conference All-Conference and DuPage County All-Area teams. He is the son of 10-year NBA veteran Fred Hoiberg, the former head coach of the Chicago Bulls and current head coach of the Nebraska men's basketball team.
