      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Smart, vibrant, and urgent without being didactic, Do the Right Thing is one of Spike Lee's most fully realized efforts -- and one of the most important films of the 1980s.

Wendy Ide Times (UK) [Spike Lee] offers no solutions, but confronts us with the facts — the audience is left with no doubts about the authenticity of the story. May 23, 2023 Full Review Wael Khairy RogerEbert.com Over 30 years later, Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” remains more relevant than ever. Mar 31, 2023 Full Review Geoffrey Nowell-Smith Sight & Sound For all its apparent roughness, Do the Right Thing is aesthetically very sophisticated, particularly in the first half. But at the end it collapses both aesthetically and politically. Jan 16, 2020 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand [Spike] Lee doesn't attempt to answer the complicated questions of racism, misunderstanding and simmering anger as much as confront them with a hard clarity. Aug 19, 2023 Full Review Terry Francis Southern Voice (Atlanta) A beautifully finished piece of work. Lee and his able cinematographer Ernest Dickerson understand how meaning often resides in mood, movingly rendered here in shots at dust of cobalt blue skies framing row houses blackened in the rancorous summer heat. May 9, 2023 Full Review Sarah Schulman Gay Community News (Boston) Do the Right Thing is a sanitized effort by Spike Lee who has now become a mainstream filmmaker, providing only a new twist on old values. Jillian D I think the movie did a great job of making the audience uncomfortable. The characters played their role very well, which kept me entertained Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/16/24 Full Review Julia T I really liked this movie it was really real and gave me and other people different perspectives. Spike lee did a nice job in his idea’s especially at the end. Ultimately it’s super sad and teaches a lesson at the same time. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/16/24 Full Review Lila A I thought it was a very entertaining movie. The actors did a great job portraying their role. I think It did a good job of the intensity and making the audience a little uncomfortable. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/10/24 Full Review Emily O I really enjoyed the movie and it gave me a different aspect on how different people live and everything they experience living in their own neighborhood and how little things like a radio can cause so many problems. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/10/24 Full Review NW This movie was pretty good and the relevancy is still there 30+ years. I appreciated how throughout the film the fourth wall was broken to invite us (the viewer) into whatever in going on in the film. The creative camera angle, lighting, and editing choices allow the film to be both an interesting and at times uncomfortable watch. The film sends a good enough message, but I am not sure if I’ll watch this film again. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/10/24 Full Review Joseph D This movie holds up very well and tackles issues still relevant today. Even though it takes place in mostly one day so much happens and the ending itself is very impactful. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/10/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
