My favourite Tricky album in terms of aggressiveness and fullness of drive. Love every tune here.
The other favourite is Maxinquaye.

Tricky admitted he wanted more airplay hence a record with more mainstream collaborators ranging from the chilli peppers to cindi lauper and alanis morrissette.
The first 2 tracks are really good, and catchy as well. On "evolution revolution" it verges on annoyingly so.
The tracks with the chilli peppers weren't that exciting though, i dont like the sound of tricky rocking out- in fact the best stuff here is with the less feted vocalists and rappers such as "you dont wanna" and the eerie closer "song for yukiko" and "your name" which both could have fit on "maxinquaye" such is their quality.
Too much of this feels badly conceived though- the nirvana cover in particular was a misstep on an album that has too many.

Ugh. I like trip hop and all but.. nah.

I don't know why but this all just doesn't sound right. This is really a bad album.
You Don't Wanna is a cool song but mostly because of the Sample; Excess is ok
But this album has no vibe

You don't wanna excess of it, but 'Excess' is very good in substance.

I actually like "Evolution Revolution Love" even with the guy from Live on the chorus (though I can't help but laugh at the thought of him singing about revolution), and Excess is pretty decent. There's a few other tracks that aren't terrible but my god the one song with Anthony Kiedis? The cover of "Something in the Way"? What the hell was Tricky thinking?

Blowback seems to elicit far too harsh criticism, considering it's pretty ok. Well, ok-ish. Depends on who's the guest parading around in which specific track, no one really expects Alanis Morissette to enliven a song, now do they? The guy from Live is the worst part about the single "Evolution Revolution Love" and the Nirvana cover has already become infamous (and is worth a peek mostly because of precisely that). But on the upshot there's a decent number of salvageable material on offer, Ambersunshower's vocals in "Over Me" are pretty fun, "You Don't Wanna" works interestingly around the keyboard line from the Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams", the more talented half of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers cranks out a very singalong-worthy song with "#1 Da Woman", "Diss Never (Dig Up We History)" is surprisingly memorable and Cyndi Lauper turns out a beguilingly morose cadence in "Five Days".
And yes, it's bizarre than on a Tricky record the focus is so rarely on him, it's after all common knowledge that this was his attempt to power grab the notoriety he used to have and the easiest way to do that was naturally to borrow some of the high profile his guests had. It doesn't work too badly but it is a very uncharacteristic Tricky release and surely not one the most representative of his, frequently dark, music.

"Evolution Revolution Love" would have been a great song if not for the Live dufus, and the cover of "something In the Way" is fucking terrible. As for the rest of_Blowback_, as someone who enjoys Tricky's vocals, it can be an interesting listen once every so often, but that's about it.
