It's always a pleasure to find a new - and good - author! I happened upon Parson's first Max Wolfe novel, Murder Man, and was captivated from the first chapter. Max is newly promoted into the major crimes division just in time to be part of the chase in solving an horrific string of murders. They are committed brutally with an unknown weapon. Soon it becomes apparent that they are connected to an event when the victims were young attendees of a posh military-type school. Max, although new to the team, is a renegade and bucks the accepted theories of who the perpetrator is and what his motive might be. There is the often portrayed struggle between the head of detectives and those following leads. Even though this is a common thread in procedurals, it appears fresh in this instance. Max is an interesting character, multifaceted, with a young daughter he is raising alone. That thread gives him added depth as a character and humanizes him. There are many twists and turns in this tale, all well devised. The ending made me want to download the sequel, Slaughter Man, immediately, which I did.

I have everything Tony Parsons has written, and only a couple of the MANY books have been, OK. So I had no reservations in buying his first in the Max Wolf series called "The Murder Bag". Since I thought it was a definite 4 star book, I thought I'd get the next couple in the set. However, this book, "The Murder Man", is the American version of "The Murder Bag", (the British version).

No where does it indicate this... so if you like this one, and want the others, make sure you don't get sucked into buying the Murder Bag...
