      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Despite a fine cast and impressive set up, Motherland: Fort Salem's ambitious ideas are overwhelmed by the sheer too-muchness of it all.

Valerie Anne Autostraddle In this time where we're more aware than ever of the insidiousness of the patriarchy, and yet have to struggle and fight at every turn to get out from under its thumb, it was really empowering to be dropped into this universe where the matriarchy reigned. May 22, 2020 Full Review Caroline Framke Variety Motherland combines too many ideas in order to make one wildly confusing show that, despite its insistence otherwise, struggles to understand what "empowerment" actually means. Mar 18, 2020 Full Review Inkoo Kang Hollywood Reporter Fort Salem offers a beautiful world to gaze at, but it's hard to get lost inside it. Mar 18, 2020 Full Review Brian T. Carney Washington Blade Creates an exciting new world where traditional gender roles are flipped and where an elite female fighting squad depends on supernatural skills and the power of women’s upraised voices as much as on advanced weaponry and physical prowess. May 20, 2022 Full Review James Hanton Starburst More inventiveness is needed to make Fort Salem linger in the memory. There is great potential for the show if Season 2 is injected with more depth and risk. Rated: 3 / 5 Sep 4, 2020 Full Review Zehra Phelan 2 Minute Telly Creator Eliot Laurence has the bones of a decent show; the history of this all-female military is built with intrigue. If they had explored its roots this could have been a more captivating series alongside the input of real female voices. Rated: 7/10 Jul 29, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

Tammy L They can spin this to continue with more seasons! Let's keep the series going! Please watch the show and judge for yourself and not just on what the negative reviews say. Absolutely love, love, love this show! Some much going on in each and every episode from the pilot to the last episode of season 3. Don't look away for a minute because you will miss something big, you have to pay attention through the whole thing. The cinema photography, special effects, the score, everything is just supurb. The actresses Taylor Hickson and Amalia Holms who play Raelle and Scylla have amazing chemistryon and off screen and it totally shows in their performance. Please, please, please someone pick up this show. It is said that the Creator Elliot Lawrence has enough material to do between 7-8 seasons of this show. This alter world is amazing! Please bring this show back! You will not be disappointed! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/13/24 Full Review Colin W It is a little fast paced for my taste but a more than solid show. Its a breeze of fresh air, good acting, fantastic storytelling and a sound worldbuilding. It can be too much at times but I rarely have seen a more compelling show than this. Recommended 100% Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/11/23 Full Review Laura K One of the best if not THE best witch shows I have ever seen. All the perspectives are new or completely reimagined and it's extremely well written and acted. You can truly tell how inspired every artist was in the making of this series. The actors, writers, animators, and everyone behind the scenes did an absolutely incredible job and every episode just leaves you wanting more. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/19/23 Full Review Maxima I Deserved all of 'em 8 planned seasons, but the world wasn't ready for it's awesomeness. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/28/23 Full Review Yasmine E I absolutely love the world building in this. It makes me want to know every minutia of this universe. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/06/23 Full Review Joseph D A genuine delight, with an incredibly engaging and enthralling cast. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/02/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
