ISKCON chairman Gopal Krishna Goswami passed away on Sunday after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was admitted to a hospital in Dehradun on May 1 with a lung infection.

ISKCON Chairman Gopal Krishna Goswami passed away after suffering cardiac arrest at a hospital in Dehradun on Sunday morning. Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences to the ISKCON devotees.

He was admitted to the Synergy Hospital on May 1 with a lung infection, the hospital's MD, Kamal Garg, told India Today.

His mortal remains have been taken to Vrindavan and final rites will be done on Monday.

Goswami had arrived in Dehradun for a Bhoomi Pujan ceremony on May 1. He was rushed to the hospital when his health deteriorated suddenly.

Expressing grief over his death, PM Modi tweeted, "Srila Gopal Krishna Goswami Maharaja was a revered spiritual icon, globally respected for his unwavering devotion to Bhagwan Shri Krishna and his tireless service through ISKCON. His teachings emphasised the importance of devotion, kindness and service to others. He also played a significant role in expanding the community service efforts of ISKCON, particularly in areas like education, health and serving the needy. My thoughts are with all devotees in this tragic hour. Om Shanti."
