From Buxton School

Buxton is a progressive, all-gender boarding and day high school located in the Berkshire mountains of western Massachusetts. Our school is centered around inquiry, community, and creativity. We take teenagers seriously—as thinkers, decision-makers, creators, and citizens.

Our classes are small, heady, and discussion-based. Our arts program is broad and deep. Our students help maintain their school through Work Program, and help run it by serving as Dorm Supervisors, Fire Marshals, Student Reps, and more. Our signature annual Urban Intensive takes every student out on the road to meet with—and be inspired by—movers and shakers in cities all over the U.S.

What students love about Buxton is that they feel free to be themselves and can make unique and impactful contributions to the school. What faculty love is that they can teach what they are passionate about, and can encourage and support students as full, complex people.

At Buxton, don’t just go to school, live your education.

A Smartphone-Free School

academic spotlight

In accordance with our intentional community and experiential education, Buxton will become a smartphone-free school starting in September 2022. We believe this will allow our students and (our faculty!) to be more enmeshed in our community and engaged in the Buxton experience, while still allowing them to be in contact with their home communities. Our policy has been covered in the Boston Globe!
