Why am I still going over The Time albums? The band was literally replaced. But with assurances that Prince would only control half their new content, the old guard got back together and put out their final (sort of) album.

Can we just investigate whatever it is that Prince has against The Time or Morris Day? He phones in a few of these side albums, but it could only be hatred that led him to give this band not just the previous album's "Chili Sauce", but now "Donald Trump (Black Version)". No other explanation.

Anywhere, some of the songs you can decently nod your head to. And there's a big emphasis on hard rock, something Prince had been steadily shying away from.

The Time had always made undercooked albums, but with their big comeback and creative rejuvenation, no expense was spared to deliver the highest quality, meatiest album they had ever done by far. But while the songs are fun, the old style just had nowhere new to go, and the songs are very shallow as a result.

This should have been their second good album. But The Time had passed.

The first 3 Time albums are basically Prince records, he plays most of the instruments, handles all the production, and makes various cameo appearances. And they're great, but I feel kind of guilty that I may have liked this one better than all of them, despite the diminished Prince input. It has a great funk rock sound and Morris is hilarious as always.

The fourth album by The Time was produced by The Time. This album integrates rock and funk rock to the Minneapolis funk.

I've always thought, that the song Blondie would have been better interpreted by Michael Jackson, because the music (funk rock) and the statement of the song would have fitted him perfectly. The two The Time members Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis even worked as producers for his 1995 album HIStory: Past, Present and Future - Book I.

My favorite tracks:
04 Jerk Out
06 Blondie
10 Skillet

I wish I could be absolutely certain that Morris Day knew just how funny he is. Then I'd be sure that when he's not playing around with this egotistical persona or telling out and out jokes he's engaging in a subtler form of humor - satire - rather than asking to be taken seriously. I know that all court jesters put across serious topics couched in buffoonery, so maybe that's why "Sometimes I Get Lonely" rears its head way back at track 12, long after The Time has offered up groove after groove, and a comic (I hope) ballad called "Donald Trump (Black Version)." But it's those grooves that make the record, every one worth hearing and several - "Jerk Out" and "Chocolate" chief among them - worth returning to again and again. And the humor of course. I laugh out loud repeatedly at the absurdity of parts of the record and I sincerely hope Day meant me to, because I have this nagging image in the back of my head of Day as a sad, lonely jester who can't get taken seriously however hard he tries.

This was the first Time album after a six-year hiatus. The plan was originally to release an album featuring just Prince and Morris called Corporate World, but, with the promise of receiving financial backing for his ill-fated Graffiti Bridge project if the original Time lineup reunited, Prince relented. This, therefore, is the only Time album that features the full band on most of the songs. It's pretty good, too, but it's kind of a mess.

This is the first Time album conceived in the CD era, and as a result, there's more of everything - more of the things that made the group great, yes, but also more of the skits and monologues that wear thin after a while. There are some strong highlights to be found, with the scorching funk-rock pair of "Blondie" and "Skillet" absolutely burning down the house. "Jerk Out" (technically their biggest hit, but I think "Jungle Love" is much better remembered) is a great, funky track, featuring a rap-like delivery from Morris. The intensely funky "Chocolate," a outtake from 1983, falls into that "all-time great" category that 777-9311 occupies amongst Time cuts - it would be among my top choices for the best Prince songs not being released under his own name.

But there's just sooooooo muuuuuuch baaaaaad stuff here that cancels it out...as always. Sigh. The title track is okay enough, but "Donald Trump (Black Version)" and "Sometimes I Get Lonely" are two more tributes to "Girl"/"Oh, Baby" from the debut...incredibly laughable ballads that everyone involved should have known better than to release. "Data Bank" is an incredibly feeble reworking of a certified unreleased Prince classic from the vaults (track down the original version - it's FAR superior), "It's Your World" doesn't leave much of an impression, and "My Summertime Thang" has never been a big favorite of mine, no matter how many times you change the title of the song. (I guess I'm just saying that everything on this album rules up until "Skillet.") As always, there is almost no in between on this album - the tunes are either superb or borderline awful.

Because of the dull tracks, this is yet another frustratingly inconsistent album from the Time. When they're good, they're REALLY good, but there's just not enough consistently good tunes in their catalog to rank their output with the very best Prince work. However, I will say this in favor of Pandemonium: because there's (literally) more of the Time's personality on this album than any other, this might stand as their definitive album. Which is not the same as BEST, mind you, but never has what makes the Time THE TIME shined through brighter than this release.

GOOD 2/10 (exclude 1 [intro], 3 5 9 15 [skit])
Jerk Out
Sometimes I Get Lonely

The Time (TT) is an R&B band from Minneapolis, & affiliated with Prince. TT’s members include lead singer Morris Day (MD), drummer/hypeman Jerome Benton, & other instrumentalists, including guitarist & keyboardist. Producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis were original members of TT, but not in the band for this album. This is TT’s 4th studio album, & 1st that I’ve reviewed.

BEATS 2.5 TT provides a variety of beat types, including Minneapolis sound funk (“Jerk Out”), hard rock (“Blondie”), & adult contemporary R&B (“Sometimes I Get Lonely”). The beat speed is energetic or midtempo.

VOCALS MD is a decent singer, with good comedy.

SUBJECT MATTER MD’s main topic is love/relationship.

I recommend skipping this, & instead listening to Prince 1984 Purple Rain.

The Time's comeback album is more legitimately a group affair than their three early eighties efforts, recognising that Jesse, Jimmy, Terry and Morris in particular had all gone on to have solo careers with various degrees of success in the intervening period. Nevertheless, the hand of Prince is still here and he contributes a number of song, including the clever 'Jerk Out', 'Chocolate' and 'Data Bank'. All the ingredients of the classic Time are here, and more - checkout the Jesse influenced rock of 'Blondie' and 'Skillet' - yet somehow the whole thing doesn't flow in the way that you really, desparately want it to. Still, there's enough good stuff on here to make you feel a little sad that after this all-to-brief reunion the original members largely dispersed and went their own ways again.
