Here’s a roundup of high school varsity action on Friday, May 17.

Baseball

Archbishop Spalding 3, Calvert Hall 0: Sam Houches hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the second inning and starting pitcher Peyton Mamula struck out seven in 5 2/3 innings to pick up the win for the host Cavaliers in Game 1 of the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference championship series. The defending champion Cavaliers can wrap up the best-of-3 series in Game 2 set for 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Joe Cannon Stadium.

Patterson Mill 3, Allegany 1: Mike Hemelt gave up one run on five hits over 4 2/3 innings before Travis Loewe came and closed the door, throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. Offensively for the Huskies, Loewe and Chase Cichocki each had two hits with RBIs.

Fallston 10, Gwynn Park 0: Drew Rommel threw a five-inning, one-hit shutout to lead the Cougars in their state quarterfinal win. Rommel struck out five in the game. Fallston took advantage of 13 walks. Of their 10 runs, the Cougars only got two RBIs: one from Zach Loewe and one from Zach Stromberger. Aidan Deck went 2-for-2 and scored four runs.

Crofton 8, Perry Hall 5: Crofton scored six runs in the top of the second, and although the Gators chipped away, they could never recover. Ryan Bruce and Travon Robinso had home runs for Perry Hall in the loss. Jake Benner drove in two runs.

Brunswick 5, Liberty 2: Lions pitching only gave up six hits, but Brunswick made the most of them pair with Liberty mistakes in their state quarterfinal. Carter Shanks gave up four runs, only one earned, on five hits in 3 1/3 innings. Michael Martin gave up one run on one hit in 2 2/3 innings. Offensively, Shanks had an RBI hit and Rylan Palle also drove in a run.

Softball

Perry Hall 12, Montgomery Blair 2: Winner Jenna Neff went three innings, gave up two runs on five hits, walked one and struck out two and the host Gators beat the Blazers in a Class 4A state quarterfinal. Perry Hall jumped out to an 11-0 lead after three innings. The Gators got home runs from Madison Carl, Rileigh Kitchin and Addison Dunlap. Carl, Kitchin and Shalimar Lopez all finished with three RBIs.

Francis Scott Key 2, Patterson Mill 0: The Eagles shut out the Huskies in a 1A quarterfinal, getting revenge on the team that knocked them out of this same round a year ago. FSK got an RBI single from Jasmine Kline in the third and scored their second run in the fifth when Morgan Kenney was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. In the circle, Kline gave up just three hits in the shutout. She struck out three. Amanda Redmiles scattered eight hits in the loss, while striking out 10.

Linganore 16, Marriotts Ridge 1: The Mustangs season ended in the Class 3A state quarterfinals. Scoreless through two innings, the Lancers broke the game open with five runs in the third and eight in the fourth. Jasmine Smith, Sienna Williams, Brynne Mellady and Biff Lorah each had a hit for Marriotts Ridge.
