President Carter was encouraged to write this book by a wide coalition of leaders of all faiths. His urgent report is current. It covers the plight of women and girls-strangled at birth, forced to suffer servitude, child marriage, genital cutting, deprived of equal opportunity in wealthier nations and "owned" by men in others. And the most vulnerable, along with their children, are trapped in war and violence.

He addresses the adverse impact of distorted religious texts on women, by Protestants, Catholics, Jews, and Muslims. Special verses are often omitted or quoted out of context to exalt the status of men and exclude women. In a remark that is certain to get attention, Carter points out that women are treated more equally in some countries that are atheistic or where governments are strictly separated from religion.

Carter describes his personal observations of the conditions and hardships of women around the world. He describes a trip in Africa with Bill Gates, Sr. and his wife, where they are appalled by visits to enormous brothels. He tells how he joined Nelson Mandela to plead for an end to South Africa's practice of outlawing treatments to protect babies from AIDS-infected mothers.

Throughout, Carter reports on observations of women activists and workers of The Carter Center. This is an informed and passionate charge about human rights abuses against half the world's population. It comes from one of the world's most renowned human rights advocates.

Jimmy Carter was born in Plains, Georgia, and served as thirty-ninth president of the United States. After leaving the White House, he and his wife, Rosalynn, founded the Atlanta-based Carter Center, a nonprofit organisation that works to prevent and resolve conflicts, enhance freedom and democracy, and improve health around the world. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

I've always admired Jimmy Carter without knowing much about him. What is great about this book, is that it is a true call to action. He doesn't just babble about Christian principles. He lives them as he understands them. I am an ardent humanist and have no problem with Carter's Christianity. He dares to go against powerful forces that would keep women down forever, disallow birth control or any decent, humanistic medical practice regarding human sexuality. It was so powerful, and so upsetting, that I was depressed for a few days after reading it. On the other hand, he and his working partners have saved the lives of countless people and helped to make life worth living for them. He also turns a very bright light on anti-progressive forces at work in America against women's rights as employees and as sexual beings apart from conventional stereotypes; and on the violence that they suffer in their work and family lives in the western world. I hope this encourages you to choose to read this book and to be more certain in your progressive attitudes and to become more active in promoting progressive social policies.
